Smith-Miller et al. (2014) define burnout as a work-related condition that makes the involved individual harbor a sense of disconnectedness, emotional depletion, and depersonalization. The Institute of Medicine considers it a priority to eliminate the work-related fatigue among nurses, especially those working in the critical care unit, in order to improve healthcare service delivery and job satisfaction for the nurses. According to Shahriari et al. (2014), nurses working in critical care units are vulnerable to burnout due to the complex nature of the patients’ health problems. The critical health conditions of patients in the critical require the nurses to remain active throughout the shift. The study by Shahriari et al. (2014) establishes various burnout dimensions that played a critical role in critical care unit nurses’ performance and job satisfaction when shift rotation is implemented. The dimension includes emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The study concludes that rotating shifts reduces emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and increases personal accomplishment due to decreased burnout, increasing patient care.
Dilig-Ruiz et al. (2018) examine the current nursing shortage with CCU nurses. The study discovered that the satisfaction of those CCU nurses working rotating shifts showed higher job satisfaction. The study conducted by Witkowski et al. (2012) on nurses in four states indicated that more than 80 percent of nurses in hospitals that engage in high shift rotation were satisfied with their job. However, the number of hours working per shift significantly impacted the nurses’ patient care and job satisfaction. Nurses working more than ten hours or longer were associated with high job dissatisfaction, experience burnout, and patient care decreases (Min et al., 2019). Lyndon (2016) highlights interventions that can be utilized to address burnout, such as enhancing communication and clinician workflow.
