What is the difference between evidence and proof? How can you test evidence? How can you use evidence to persuade an audience?
Answer
In legal circles, evidence involves the rules and legal principles that govern the proof of facts in a legal proceeding. It can therefore be defined as a fact or situation that suggests that something might be true. Far from that, proof is a situation that removes all doubts. Sometimes more than one evidence can add up to proof. On top of this, proof may be classified into formal proof, mathematical proof and proof of concept depending on the circumstances at hand (Murphy, 2003).
There are a number of ways in which evidence can be tested. First, one can test for internal consistency. In this situation, one tests whether there is contradiction within the evidence. Contradiction within the evidence tends to diminish faith in the claim. Secondly, one can test for external validity. In this case, the argument is based on whether the evidence sounds true. If the claims are consistent with the experience, then the evidence to be true. The third way in which evidence can be tested is through corroboration. In this test, a claim that are supported by other evidences (Kirkpatrick, 1977) .If one finds that there is enough evidence, he will support the claim he will have more faith on the evidence. Evidence can also be measured by evaluating the level of biasness. In this approach, one will have to examine the motives of the people providing evidence to understand if they have an interest in deceiving. If interests between the two parties do not match, one will have less faith in their source of evidence (Murphy, 2003).
Persuasion is not an easy task and therefore for one to be in a position to persuade the audience, he must be able to clear any skepticism. To persuade an audience, one can use different oratory skills, data evidence, theories and proofs, cases images and stories.
