Compare and contrast Western attitudes about aging and non-Western attitudes. What can we learn from cultures that are different from our own?
It appears that historically everyone respected and valued the elderly, considering them to be wise and having knowledge of the world that the younger people did not. However, after the two world wars, that all changed. Because of the Great Depression, many younger people began to resent the older generation because they were taking jobs away from them. The Western world today treats the elderly like something that needs to be hidden, often putting them in nursing homes while the non-Western world reveres them, most often taking care of them within the family. Since there has been a change in the life expectancy of the average person, non-Western countries have taken to caring for their elderly within the family unit rather than using home health care or nursing homes. This is sometimes due to socioeconomic status since these people can sometimes not afford these things (Howe, 2016).
I believe we can learn a great deal from other cultures. For example, the Latino culture still addresses their elders with respect; the Japanese culture shows respect by bowing whenever an elder walks into the room; in some cultures, the elder is served their food first to show respect. These people have lived a long life and had some amazing experiences. We should give them the respect they deserve and listen to what they have to say.

Western attitudes on aging seem to be quite negative. Our test states that the elderly population are “less valued, dismissed, and even despised by some”. (T. R. Howe., 2018). As the life expectancy has increased over the last few decades, the western world often has views of the elderly as being a burden, and someone that needs to be taken care of. The text also discusses “disengagement theory”, which basically teaches that the elderly should isolate themselves to prepare for death. Western society is a poor example of how the elderly should be treated. Looking at cultures from around the world, such as in Turkey, we are shown that elders are served first for their meals and receive a show of respect. In Asian cultures, it is most common that people bow as an elderly person enters the room, another show of respect, as these cultures view their elderly with a great amount of respect and appreciate the wisdom that they may offer from a lifetime of experience’s. In my opinion, the western culture needs to learn some respect for the earlier generations, the generations that have paved the pathway for how we live our lives today.
