Saint Leo University has adopted six Benedictine Values as part of its liberal arts education. The value of Community has been identified by the criminal justice faculty as particularly relevant for this course.

Community involves fostering a spirit of belonging, unity, and interdependence based on mutual trust and respect to create socially responsible environments that challenge all of us to listen, to learn, to change and to serve.

Respect is also an important value for Saint Leo and believes that the community’s strength depends on the unity and diversity of our people, on the free exchange of ideas and on learning, living, and working harmoniously.

For this discussion thread assignment, students should answer the following questions in their own words:

How can all citizens help to foster a sense of Community in their neighborhood and town/city they live in? How can citizens help to create unity and a socially responsible environment in their neighborhood – and this would include those who are ex-offenders and are now a member of their community.

1. Provide examples of either language or actions that the citizens can use to demonstrate a sense of Community in their neighborhoods – to include ex-offenders.

Considering the ethical issues facing law enforcement officers, how might an officer demonstrate Respect to someone that is incarcerated in their facility?

2. Provide examples of either language or actions that a correctional officer can use to demonstrate respect.

For citizens to foster a sense of community within their neighborhoods, they need to be active participants in the community organizations, causes, and activities focused on helping society. It is prudent that citizens are part of neighborhood drives that would also include initiatives to reintegrate ex-offenders back into society. The reentry of ex-offenders back into society is something that citizens need to celebrate as a win within the community. Subsequently, the citizens within the community should provide a network of relationships and a range of activities that will allow the offenders to understand themselves within this new reality. The ex-offenders will be in a position to improve their social skills, enhance their social functioning and establish how they get to build their lives again without engaging in crime again.
An example of a project that will ensure a streamlined reentry of ex-offenders includes a community project in which the families of these offenders do have support systems from the community itself. This family will consequently be the support system for their family member back from prison. The community will ensure that the offenders can get employment opportunities to ensure they continue to dispense their responsibilities. Additionally, this reintegration will ensure they can also be part of the planning, implementing, and evaluating the reintegration plans in natural settings.

Respectful actions are fundamental in assisting the officers to have reciprocated respect from inmates, remaining safe and ensuring the institution runs smoothly. Respect from these officers will ensure that the inmates are left in a better frame of mind than before the encounter. Law enforcement officers will demonstrate respect to inmates by speaking with them in a cool and collective tone, asking before making orders, and demonstrating concern for the inmates’ well-being. Furthermore, respect is shown when conversing with inmates on serious matters as private as possible and not in the presence of other inmates. They should consider the other person’s perspective as inmates will realize that you respected their point of view despite the prevailing authority and come to an amicable solution that has listened and considered both sides. The officers should undertake their duties to maintain a quiet, calm, and respectful atmosphere
