Turkey as hub for Arab spring exiles
Turkey is increasingly becoming a beacon of hope for the persecuted. This is a good thing. For Arab Spring exiles like Ahmed Hassan, Turkey has turned out to be a place where he can live freely. Being part of a revolutionary group that toppled longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak in 2011, Hassan’s life in Egypt became a nightmare after starring in a documentary that aired the activities of the group. He was not able to continue working as a filmmaker and cinematographer as production companies stopped hiring him (Keddie, 2020). He was also threatened and was constantly harassed; he lived in fear of going to jail. Now that he is in Turkey, he feels that he is free. Even though Turkey is not perfect, it is far much better than Egypt. Hassan is just one example of the many people whose hope has been restored by Turkey. It is also important to note that having a country like Turkey welcoming and offering humanitarian aid is crucial because crises in the Arab world are increasing and the number of people in need via conflict is increasing annually. So Turkey’s continued assistance will go a long way in helping mitigate the effects of the crises. However, the country should put measures in place to handle the challenges that come with an upsurge in its population.
The Arab spring exiles have impacted Turkey in a good way. As such, Turkey’s readiness to assist these exiled people has attracted the attention of the world. For instance, the United Nations Sustainable Development (UNDP) Group has praised Turkey for its crucial role and exemplary performance in hosting millions of refugees (Demir, 2017). Turkey’s initiative has also made it a hub of international conferences committed to development issues aimed at helping the refugees. This has, in turn, served to boost the country’s economy. Turkey’s engagement also has bilateral partners, for instance, in the region and central Asia. Obviously, it has built a very vibrant set of relationships which both from public policy and political engagement have raised Turkey’s profile.
