Description of Intervention
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) represents an intervention that is highly recommended for the treatment of traumatic disorders. One great feature of NET intervention that makes it stand out from other Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) interventions lies in its ability to focus on the creation and recognizing of the chronological setup of events that led to the traumatic disorder in a patient; this way, the intervention seeks to recapture the victim’s self-respect while at the same time upholding their human rights (Strijk et al., 2021). This type of intervention is suited for individuals and communities with experienced trauma due to cultural, social, or political situations. Administering this type of intervention needs a small group of people and a single individual, and a maximum of 10seesions can be enough. This intervention is based on the premise that the stories individuals narrate to themselves significantly influence how they perceive their wellness and experiences.
Rationale
One of the biggest strengths of Narrative Exposure Therapy is that it gives credence to individual healing from a post-trauma disorder by listening to their story of what happened and helps them heal by focusing on what the victim feels about the situation. Considering the case study, it is apparent that Hope is suffering from post-traumatic disorders as a result of the sexual harassment that she experienced with Luke. Secondly, apart from her parents and some of her friends, the community around her has betrayed her by supporting Luke. Lastly, Hope blames herself for what had happened to her, as she feels that were it not for the drinking and the fact that she allowed herself to be in a compromising position with Luke, the ordeal would not have happened to her. Narrative exposure therapy would focus on the chronology of events captured by Hope and focus primarily on improving her respect and confidence by upholding and recognizing her account of the ordeal. This would give her the confidence she needs to focus on her studies and face the community and some of her friends who she feels betrayed her.
Explanation of Support
Narrative Exposure Therapy is ideal for treating traumatic situations just like Hope’s one since letting a victim of sexual harassment give the life experience and incorporating it with what they are currently feeling about themselves allows them to create their personal identity. The fact that Narrative Exposure Therapy also focuses on upholding an individual’s human rights makes it effective since it would give Hope a chance to self-heal while also enabling her to understand the importance of seeking legal justice against Luke.
Future Applications
One of the NET intervention’s future applications is the patients suffering from post-traumatic disorders due to rape, political violence, and social injustices. NET is a vital intervention tool since it focuses on an individual’s well-being and considering their human rights. Human rights violation is a prevalent factor in the current world, and the world is grappling with an increased number of refugees. The current worldwide lockdown due to covid19 has also seen an increase in domestic violence and psychological disorders; therefore, NET as an intervention would be highly applicable in the current world for treating domestic violence victims and people and communities facing political, social, and economic injustices.
