Social Activism
The title of the article is “social activism in popular culture: A critical review of disparate responses to Beyonce’s 2016 Super Bowl performance and Kendrick Lamar’s 2016 Grammy performance.” The authors of the article are Rachel D. Davidson and Catherine A. Dobris. The main message about the article is on social activism and how strong political message are perceived based on gender, race, and power. The article explains how Both artists took social activism to another level by using their celebrity status to advocate for equality. The artists did not content to keep their political selves hidden. The artists went ahead to advocate for equal treatment of people regardless of their race. Beyonce talked about the rights of Black people. The dress code of the dancers was dressed in a manner that referred to the insurrectionist Black Panther Party in tribute of Black Activist, Malcom X. However, her political message was received with mixed reactions by a lot of people. On the other hand, the political message by Lamar invoked constructive political conversation. The article shows how message from both artists was received differently bringing the question of how intersection in power, race and gender is perceived in the realm of social activism.
Both Beyonce and Lamar brought political message to a spotlight during their performances. Their performance perpetuated the Black Lives Matter movement, which has significantly achieved what it was meant to do. The authors talk about how the artists took on stage a political message to advocate for the equal rights for Black people. Beyonce reminded people that economic justice to all people is a key component to liberation work. The quote “while both African American performers presented controversial indictments of the American judicial system regarding people of color, selecting highly visible venues for their political agendas, one is largely regarded as impassioned social commentary and the other as vile propaganda” (Davidson & Dobris 115) demonstrates how the activism messages from both artists were received differently. The message by Beyonce was regarded as vile propaganda because she is a Black person and a female. The article presents a compelling argument to support the key point by the article that the intersection in power, race and gender has potential impact on how political message is perceived and received by the audience. This shows that strong political messages that challenge the status quo are perceived differently based on gender.
Based on the analysis of the Article, I confidently agree with the argument by the authors that strong political messages that strongly challenge the status quo are perceived differently based on the person speaking. The message between Lamar and Beyonce were received and perceived differently based on gender. The message by Beyonce was regarded as a vile propaganda because it came from a woman while the message by Lamar was regarded to invoke constructive political conversations because it come from a man. Even in the modern world, women are perceived differently compared to men. women are often regarded as inferior compared to men and this explains why Beyonce’s message was received differently compared to that of Lamar.
