A ship officer is responsible for keeping the ship, crew, and people on board safe. This includes overseeing the ship’s navigation and ensuring the vessel’s safe operation at sea, in port and at anchor. The ship officer liaises between the captain and the crew to ensure safety in emergencies like a fire, abandoning ship and medical crises.
The Nigerian MET requires a combination of specific educational and practical experience to become a ship officer. First, you are required to have completed at least a diploma in maritime operations. Otherwise, you can also become a ship officer by completing a cadetship with a shipping company which entails on-the-job training and experience of four-year study over the sea.
Another alternative to becoming a ship officer is enrolling in a university course in nautical or marine engineering. To pursue these courses, you will be required to have a strong background in subjects, including English, mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Other requirements include passing a medical test that examines eyesight and physical fitness before being cleared to commence training.
