Supply Chain Modelling Resit Coursework
Please send the coursework submission documents to: Daniel Gartner (gartnerd@cardiff.ac.uk) by Friday, 12th August 2022, 12 (noon) GMT. The coursework can be done alone or in groups of up to
2 members. I trust you know better with whom you want to do the coursework or whether you prefer
doing it alone. Please e-mail your solutions in one attachment (ZIP file).
Please make sure that you include names and student IDs of all your group members in
your email and coursework documents.
Part 1
Consider the generation/transmission capacity expansion problem in Prof. Jim Luedtke’s slides:
https://cnls.lanl.gov/External/GSSlides2021/Luedtke.pdf slides 2–5. We want to compare the
Deterministic Model with the Two-Stage Stochastic Problem.
Questions / Tasks to complete:
(a) Using MSWord or LATEX, write down the sets, indices and parameters, decision variables, objective
function and constraints for the deterministic problem.
(b) Expand on (a) and write down the stochastic model and extensions in terms of parameters etc.
(c) Create an Excel Spreadsheet for the input parameters (data) of the deterministic problem. As a
start, you can use the dataset provided in slide 26 but obviously you calculate the average demand
for the deterministic model.
(d) Create an Excel Spreadsheet for the input parameters (data) of the stochastic problem. Again, you
can use the parameters from slide 26 plus use some random scenarios / data for the capacities Ci
.
Note that c) and d) need to match up to allow a like for like comparison. That means the averages
from the stochastic problem parameters should be the expected values used in the deterministic
problem.
(e) Implement the Deterministic Mathematical Model in Excel using OpenSolver1
(f) Implement the Two-stage stochastic Model in Excel using OpenSolver1
(g) Run both models and provide the objective function value and the value of all decision variables. Provide tests about the usefulness of both the deterministic and stochastic model, similar
to Maggioni and Wallace (Annals of OR, 2012, https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/
s10479-010-0807-x).

If you have a Mac and OpenSolver doesn’t work, please use Excel Solver. However, the number of
constraints is limited to 200. So you should keep the size of your problem small to make the model work.
Part 2
COVID-19 has disrupted supply chains world-wide. Using no more than 4 (four) A4 pages (LATEXor
Word), please complete the following tasks:
Create a framework of no more than 5 categories to categorise literature in the field of COVID-19
related supply chain disruptions. We want to focus on journal articles and conference proceedings
only. You may borrow frameworks from that literature.
Using the scopus.com search engine, find 10 or more papers in the Operational Research / Management Science literature and classify the papers into your framework.
1
Explain in your search
– what papers have in common,
– where research gaps are,
– trends in research, and
– whether the models have been used in practise (provide e.g. the names of companies).
