The recent move by the Biden administration to cancel or forgive student loan debt for Americans making less than $125,000 per year is the topic I’ve chosen for this paper (Lobosco, 2022). The loan debt cancellation is meant to help many working Americans who have been struggling to pay these loan debts while trying to improve their lives, feed their families, or start families. But the American public has had different feelings about the issue. Some people support the move, while others are against it. The mainstream media’s coverage of the issue has shown that different national news organizations have different opinions and biases about how to cover the issue.
Research from CNN, Fox News, and The Forbes Magazine has shown how divided the media is on the issue. For example, CNN, which is one of the most liberal news outlets in the United States, is covering the story in a way that seems to support what the Biden Administration is doing (Lobosco, 2022). CNN’s coverage tries to tell viewers and the general public who will benefit from the program and how. On the other hand, Fox News, which is a conservative news outlet, doesn’t like what the Biden administration is doing. They say it’s expensive and just a way to get people to vote for the Democrats in the election later this year (Fox News Staff, 2022). Lastly, Forbes Magazine, which is mostly non-political and focuses on business and money news, is talking about the economic points of the program and how it will affect the economy of the country (Friedman, 2022). So, three news organizations all talk about the same issue, but each from a different point of view.
