Current Knowledge
My current knowledge about drugs and alcohol is that they can affect the normal functioning of body organs. The effects can be both long-term and short-term depending on various factors. People who abuse drugs and alcohol can develop addiction or dependence tendencies which alter their quality of life. For example, cocaine is a popular drug but it causes headaches, heart attacks, lung problems, irritability, and reduced sexual drive. Alcohol can also impair judgment leading to violence or unprotected sex. Statistics indicate that drugs and alcohol can lead to the transmission of diseases through injections such as HIV/AIDs or hepatitis. Therefore, I have learned that drugs are not safe since they can expose an individual to various social and biological risks.
Drugs and alcohol can lead to death through road accidents. For example, my family lost a cousin in a grisly road accident. The investigation report indicated that the accident occurred due to driving while intoxicated with alcohol. Other drugs such as heroin and marijuana are highly addictive. Therefore, after using them, individuals develop cravings to always get a ‘high’. To satisfy the high, people use a substantial amount of money and time looking for drugs. The effects can lead to bankruptcy and poverty since individuals spend all their time and money to satisfy their desires. To the young people who are not working, they get into violent gangs to control the sale and distribution of drugs. I have witnessed talented young people drying due to the violent activities of gangs. The deaths bring to an end to their career and dream in sports. Drugs and alcohol are not safe for the prosperity of a society and the well-being of individuals due to their negative consequences.
Influences, Beliefs, and Parenting
The negative outcomes I have experienced relating to drugs and alcohol have influenced my decision not to use drugs. I have also been learning through various research studies that drugs can affect the functionality of the brain. For example, one research study I read stated that drugs can kill cells in the brains leading to poor functionality. I have also seen families ending up in divorce and friends negatively affected by drugs and alcohol. Therefore, I have made a resolve not to engage in drugs for the sake of my health, education, future dreams, and family.
I believe that alcohol and drugs can ruin the lives of young or old people. My belief anchored on religious texts which indicate that wines should not be taken by princes since it will impair judgment. I also believe that I can spend precious time building my future than spending a weekend clubbing. One of the situations that influenced my decision is when I accompanied a friend to a club. Apart from drugs and alcohol, immorality is another result of intoxication. When people cannot the right decisions, they engage in activities that ruin their lives.
My parents and siblings also influenced my decision since they do not take drugs and alcohol. During the childhood years, our parents always gave us examples of people in the neighborhood who ended up in trouble due to the influence of drugs. For example, one of my uncles was jailed for drug trafficking thus losing the opportunity to become a sports star. The situations impact my beliefs about drugs since they are practical and scientifically proven. Statistics from the criminal justice system and other government agencies indicate the detestable negative effects of drugs and alcohol.
