Smart card technology and biometric authentication systems have revolutionized the world. A single card, yours exclusively, and one’s unique biological features allows one to enter one’s office. This essay will illustrate the advantages of these technologies and the challenges associated with their use.
Smart cards and similar technology
The convenience of smart card technology is worth the possible loss of privacy. This is because the technology serves to enhance security in the workplace. These cards are a vital part of commercial security systems-keeping areas that are designated safe and secure by regulating entry or limiting access within a space (Hendry 12). Therefore, management is able to track the exact times of entry and exit. The loss of privacy associated with one’s movements being tracked through the use of the smart cards is a small price to pay to ensure that the wrong people do not gain access to a company’s premises.
I do believe that the employers have the right to track the movement of individuals. This is particularly necessary when the employers want to keep an eye on their equipment such as company vans or employer-issued mobile phones, ensuring that employees are clocking in and out of time and are reporting mileage correctly. There are several advantages associated with the government and one’s employer always knowing where one is. For instance, they will always be aware if one is safe or not, they will also know if one is doing their work as expected, and know if labor laws are being adhered to (Maguire et al. 50). Some of the disadvantages include invasion of privacy and loss of trust.
I have been identified with a biometric system before. I must confess that I found the experience to be fascinating. In particular, I was identified by a facial recognition system. I ended up appreciating my uniqueness as a person, and the great way technology is leveraging this uniqueness to enhance security in our lives.
Conclusion
Evidently, organizations are increasingly applying the use of smart card technology and biometric authentication systems to regulate access in certain areas of their premises. These technologies have also made it possible for employers to be aware of their employees’ whereabouts at all times. This has served to enhance security in the workplace, and prevent the theft of company’s assets. However, this has come at a cost; loss of privacy and loss of trust.
