Academic integrity refers to the commitment to and demonstration of ethical behavior and honesty in an academic setting and involves the provision of credit to other people when using their ideas to avoid plagiarism (Ayodele, Yao, & Haron, 2018). On the other hand, academic originality refers to a declaration that the submitted work is one’s work, that plagiarism has not been committed and have referenced all the sources used in work appropriately. Both academic integrity and originality are important elements on writing doctoral papers as these are two elements that need to be adhered to for the work to meet the threshold of being awarded marks. This is because they both advocate for giving credit to other people whose work is used and refraining from cheating or rather violating the laid down rules for an assignment. Hence, this post looks at how academic integrity and originality are connected and the need to uphold them for doctoral studies.
As stated above, both academic integrity and originality are connected. For instance, for a student to be declared academically honest, they have to hand in original work free of plagiarism. By doing so, one undertakes all their academic tasks honestly and acknowledges all the source from which they got information from. Moreover, academic integrity plays a critical role in realizing originality, and thus, it can be said that originality is a component of academic originality (Ayodele, Yao, & Haron, 2018). Additionally, since academic integrity means avoiding plagiarism while originality refers to the presentation of plagiarism-free work; it means that for one to achieve the desired academic integrity, they first have to uphold originality.
In conclusion, it is clear that both academic integrity and originality connect in the sense that they both undermine a student’s learning and upholding them safeguards their reputation as well as help in contributing to the well-being of the society.
