Quantitative research methods in psychology , Written Assignment: Research report on a correlational study social anxiety and sleep report essay

Participant Information Sheet

Title of Project: The Relationship Between Social Anxiety and Sleep
Name of Lead Researcher: Dr Michael Broll, University of West London

You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide it is important that you understand why the research is being conducted and what it involves. Please take time to read the following information. Ask the lead researcher (via email) if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide if you want to take part or not.

1. What is the purpose of the study?
The aim of the study is to understand how a person’s sleeping habits may be related to their level of ease or nervousness in social situations. It will also generate data which will be used by all Level 4 Psychology students to analyse as part of their first assessment on the module Quantitative Research Methods in Psychology.

2. Do I have to take part?
Definitely not. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part – read section 3 below carefully and do not take part if you think you may find the topic distressing. If you do take part you will be asked to give consent by clicking “I agree to take part” on the consent form part of the survey. You are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason – you can just stop answering the questions or answer them at random. If you do so however, please click “do not include my data “ box at the end of the survey.

3. What will happen to me, and to my data, if I take part?
You will be asked to read a list of 30 possible social situations, and to indicate for each statement how much you would expect each situation to make you feel uneasy, stressed, or nervous. You will then be asked to indicate how many hours of sleep you got for the past seven nights. You will also be asked to give your gender, and your age in years. This process will take around 10 to 15 minutes, and you can miss out any question that you don’t want to answer.
The data will be collated and analysed, and each student involved in the project will write a report explaining what was done and what was found. So you will learn about the results of this study, from your own data, as you progress through the module. If you leave the module for any reason you could email the lead researcher (see below) to learn about the results.

4. Are there any risks or benefits involved?
There are no perceived risks to this study. If you believe for any reason that this topic may be upsetting for you, then please do not participate (see section 2 for an idea for how to do this without engaging with the questions). There are also no perceived benefits, beyond the opportunity to reflect on your own feelings about social situations, and your sleeping habits, and also the chance to see how quantitative research data are collected.

5. Will my taking part in the study be kept anonymous and confidential?
Yes, your data will be kept secure and your name is not recorded. As soon as you submitted your questionnaire, there will be no way of identifying which answers are yours. This does mean that you cannot take your data back after you have given your answer sheet in. You may choose not to fill in your age and gender if you feel that information may compromise your anonymity in any way.
