Context
• This group assessment has been prescribed to appraise your ability to academically research
and discuss the resort and spa industry and its impact on the environment.
• This assessment has also been set to provide the opportunity for you to work as a group in
researching your choice of resort and spa. You are expected not just to look at how this venue is
managed, but also its relationship to its environment and the persective its customers have of
their interactions with the venue. You will also be asked to consider whether or not this venue is
considering recent trends in the resort and spa sector and how they might utilise knowledge of
these trends to improve their customer offering.
• Successful completion of this assessment will help to prepare you to assess the management of
resorts and spas and how well they match the environment in which they operate. It will also
help you to maintain currency in the increasingly changing resort and spa industry.

Instructions
This assessment is in two parts, with this being the first part (see Assessment 2 Part B for the second
part). To successfully complete this assessment you will need to:
 Form groups of three (3) or four (4). If you have any trouble finding class members to form a
group with, please contact your lecturer and they will help you join a group.
 As a group, you will then need to choose any resort and spa venue (it has to be both – you
should confirm your choice of venue with your Learning Facilitator) anywhere in the world.
Bear in mind that you will need to research this venue, so the more information you can find
the easier it will be to write your report.
 Once you have chosen a venue you are to then develop a Report that discusses the
following:
o The history and development of this specific venue (utilising your knowledge,
critically analyse how well this venue was introduced to the market);
o Whether or not this venue has kept in alignment with the general paradigms of the
resort and spa sector;
o How well this venue has serviced its customers (make sure you consider this from
the customers’ perspective); and,
o How well this resort and spa has incorporated emerging trends into its business
model.
 The group will need to conduct research via the academic databases, government and
industry websites and publications, and the professional media in order to research the
resort and spa, best practice, academic research concerning your topic and any other
research that may be relevant.
 You are expected to work objectively and consider both positive and negative factors.
You will then need to present your findings in report format (please see the academic writing guide
for the Report Writing Style Guide that must be followed).
It is recommended that you use the following structure:
 Cover page
 Synopsis or Executive Summary highlighting the main findiings of the report (not included in
the word count)
 Table of contents (not included in the word count)
 Introduction that covers the background, aim and scope of the report
 A short introduction to the resort and spa venue, including a summary of its history and a
critique of its introduction into the market
 A discussion of the venue’s alignment with general paradigms
 The customer service experience at the resort and spa
 The embracing of emerging trends at the venue
 A short concluding paragraph summarising the main findings
 Reference list (containing a minimum of 10 sources as outlines in the submission
instructions)
Your submission will be assessed via the Turnitin submission point and feedback and a grade will be
provided with a maximum of two weeks of the submission deadline.
