Assessment 3 Case Study 3 Brief
—
Chris is planning to buy a new car seat for his taxi business that provides extra safety for
babies. After narrowing his choices down to three models (Safety 1st, Mother’s Choice and
Infa-Secure) within his budget, he is having difficulty deciding which one to purchase. He has
compared each model against one another on the basis of three criteria: protection, ease of
use and cost. His comparisons are summarised below (legend: S = Safety 1st, M = Mother’s
Choice, and I = Infa-Secure):
Protection Ease of Use
S M I S M I
S 1 3 1/2 S 1 1/3 1/2
M 1/3 1 1/4 M 3 1 2
I 2 4 1 I 2 1/2 1
Cost
S M I
S 1 2 1.2
M 1/2 1 1/2
I 1/1.2 2 1

Chris wants to incorporate all three criteria into his final decision. However, the criteria are not
equally important. The following matrix summarises his comparisons of the importance of the
criteria:
Criteria
Protection Ease of Use Cost
Protection 1 2 3
Ease of Use 1/2 1 1/2
Cost 1/3 2 1
Based on these matrices, Chris wants you to recommend the best alternative.
