1. Do you have any experience with publishing or manuscript writing? Why do you think learning to write for a professional journal is important for DNPs?

2. Do you have any questions about the manuscript assignment for this course or any concerns about learning to write a manuscript?

3. After review the resources on writing a manuscript from a DNP project, how to write an EBP manuscript, and what reviewers say–please identify your greatest area of learning. What was the most helpful and insightful part of these resources for you?

4. Finding time to write can be difficult, are there any suggestions from the course reading you find helpful? Are there any suggestions you have that are not mentioned in this article–if so, please share!

1. Using the resources provided this week select a journal you think would be a good fit with your capstone project for a manuscript submission? Why is it a good fit? Please share a link to the journal website.
2. Please review the journals author guidelines and share the following:
a. Are query letters permitted? If so name the person and their title (example chief editor)
b. What are the main headings required for the manuscript submission?
c. What formatting or style does the journal require (APA, etc.)?
3. Based on the course reading–will there be more than one author for your manuscript? Why or Why not? What would the author order be? Why?
Week 3 Discussion Forum – Normal Posting Rules!
1. Describe any experiences you have had with grant writing. In addition please note if there are any opportunities that have arisen since starting the DNP program for grant writing. If none have, are there any potential opportunities after DNP degree completion.

2. Why is it important for a DNP to be knowledgeable about and possess skills for grant writing?

3. There are many web addresses for funding sources provided in the Waxman and Melnyk texts–in addition to ones found through the NIH and NINR weblinks. Please explore the different funding sources and find one that is relevant to your capstone topic. Explain what type of funding source it is, why it is relevant to your topic, and provide a hyperlink to it.

Week 4 Discussion Forum
1. The Lusk article, Melnyk text, and Waxman text all provide recommendations for writing a successful grant proposal. Please select three recommendations total from these resources that you believe to be the most important and discuss.

2. Each grant application has its own style, formatting, and required components. Please review the grant you selected last week to see what the required components are. Which of these components do you think would be the easiest and the most difficult to write? Why? If your grant does not have the required components please review the typical components mention in Melnyk to answer the question.

3. Grant writing in a team approach can have many benefits. If you were to write a grant as part of a team–which role would you like to take on and why?

Week 5 Discussion Forum
1. As you prepare your grant budget–please share the materials you will be including. This should include ALL costs associated with your project (salaries, direct and indirect costs, cost of equipment, etc.) as if you are starting from the beginning without any resources being provided by your project implementation site.
2. Please review the instructions for the funding source you chose in week 2. How much is the grant worth? Are there any details for what the money can be used for–if so, please share them.
3. Review your list of costs for question 1 and based on the amount of money provided in the grant, determine which costs you would ask for with your chosen funding source. Justify why you would choose these items?

1. Please go back and review the funding source you previously chose–Do they have an electronic submission process? If so, are the directions clear with what you need in order to have the appropriate IT applications and equipment (provide detail on what they are). Based on the course reading is there anything you need to prepare for to prevent problems with this submission process?

2. What is the review process for the funding source you chose? Based on this review process–what do you think the strongest and weakest parts of your grant proposal would be? Why? (If your grant does not provide the review process please refer to the common feedback from grant reviewers content in your Melnyk text and use the review criteria provided.)

3. The NIH link for postaward considerations is one of many examples for what is required of the grant awardee. On your own find an additional resource about post award considerations–it could be a website related to the grant you have chosen, a you-tube video, etc. Provide a summary of what it involves as well as a link to the resource. (Please note it must be different than the NIH postaward consideration provided in the course.)

1. How can value based purchasing, pay for performance, and bundle payment impact nursing care and the nursing profession? What do you think can be done within the nursing profession to influence this impact? Have you experienced any of this impact (good or bad) within your current place of employment?

**All of you should be able to argue why investing in nursing is a good business practice!! Begin to think about your own projects and how it can result in costs savings or increased reimbursements.

2. After reading Nurse Led Reform: Is it Time to Rethink the Nursing Unit? do you think this type of nursing care is feasible and would assist in promoting EBP? Why or why not? Provide evidence to support your answer.

3. After reading The State of Play: Health Care Reform in 2017 please share your greatest area of learning and share any thoughts you have about potential changes to the current health system.

Week 8 Discussion Forum
1. Discuss why it is important for DNP nurse leaders to understand essential budget components. Pick the three budgeting “key words” or concepts from Waxman that you think are the most influential or most important and provide a rationale as to why.

2. Waxman discusses self-scheduling–pros and cons. Do you have any experience with self-scheduling? If so, please share the experience and compare it with any applicable pros/cons from Waxman.

3. Using the hospital compare website provided this week–look up the hospital you work at or a local hospital’s 30-day readmission rate. Please reflect on this rate and provide any reasons based on the course reading for the rating (good or bad). If the rating is poor, using the course reading provide suggestions to improve it.

4. What does the current literature say about an effective peer review program to obtain sustainable safety and quality outcomes? Is there an effective peer review process at your work site?

1. After reviewing the reading on NP reimbursement–what do you think are the three most important concepts an NP should be familiar with to maximize their value? Why–provide rationale and justification.
2. Evaluate your organization’s mission statement (or a previous place of employment if your current organization does not have one) and determine how well it matches the current state of affairs. How well does it describe what your organization is and does? How is the organization doing in living its mission?
3. Evaluate your organization’s vision statement. Is it inspirational? Actionable? Measurable? Provide support for your answer.

1. After reading the materials on cost effectiveness and cost benefit–explain and justify where you think your EBP project falls?
2. With all the changes that are occurring in health care such as pay for performance and value-based purchasing, what are some of the challenges your work environment is facing? What is your organization doing to plan for the financial consequences? Do you see any IHI or NQF initiatives being put into place?
3. Waxman reviews a number of financial statements. Which statement is most applicable to your current employment setting and why? Are you ever involved with development of this financial statement?

1. What is an EBP Bundle? Provide an example of an EBP Bundle that is directly related or tangible to your capstone project.
2. What is translational research? How does it differ from EBP? How is it similar to EBP?
3. Is there a need for a translational research project related to your capstone topic? If so, briefly describe it.

1. EBP Champions are those clinicians in the workplace who are armed with the best available knowledge regarding clinical practice in their specialty area. These clinicians implement and facilitate change based on the available evidence for a specific problem. They evaluate outcomes and give feedback to other clinicians and administrators. They set goals for the staff.

We have talked about EBP Bundles. Some common problems that may require implementation of a bundle by the champion may include: Catheter Associated Blood Stream Infections, Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Skin Care, Restraint Use, etc. Think about your current or prior clinical setting. Have you known or do you know of champions? What makes them a champion? If not, should you have people in your workplace that function in the champion role? What could or should they be doing?

2. Look at the current literature and provide an example of how EBP is applied multi-culturally. (Example: Identify a particular article that impacts a culture, such as Hispanic, African-American, Island Pacific, or another culture). Look at the best practice application of EBP to various cultures and identify the impact on that particular culture.

3. Discuss how various generations could work effectively together for improved patient outcomes. How can the role of the DNP optimize generational differences to improve care.

1. Discuss issues related to broadening the scope of nursing practice and how the role of the DNP can impact this initiative.
2. Do you agree that there will be an issue with the nursing work force supply, and if so, what do you suggest be done about it? (be creative – you may have to give these ideas someday).
3. Please review the APRN consensus model and reflect on it. Do you think it is helpful or hurtful or both?
4. Take a look at professional practice competencies. How do you think you measure against the AONL competencies? What competencies would you like more development in?

This week we are talking about journal clubs and their use in practice settings as a way to promote evidence-based practice.
1. If you have ever participated in a journal club, share your experiences. If you have not, or are not currently, share some ideas you have for starting a journal club.
Do you think these are useful? How do you think staff nurses perceive journal clubs? Are they only useful in the academic setting? How can we make them work in the clinical setting?
I challenge you all to either start or participate in a journal club in your practice area in the near future!
