Low-Speed Wireless Local Area Networks
Low-Speed Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) can use two modes to operate; infrastructure and ad hoc. The WLAN modes allow the connection between computers and devices over a wireless network. The WLAN modes differ in various ways. One of the main differences between infrastructure mode and ad hoc mode is associated with their network set up. The network set up in ad hoc mode involves using a network adapter that provides direct communication between devices. In the infrastructure mode, network setup consists of the networked devices and wireless routers or access points that are used by devices as a connection to the computers on the network (Hoffman, 2016). Ad hoc mode and infrastructure mode also differ in terms of expandability. For instance, the infrastructure mode’s access point can support multiple wired and wireless network clients. However, in the ad hoc mode, multiple clients cannot be supported since the direct connection is prone to interference.
The infrastructure mode components include the ability to support internet sharing, roaming, and extending the wireless network’s range. The infrastructure mode components allow it to enable increased network security, reliability, and faster performance. Ad hoc mode is simple to set up and also less expensive when compared to infrastructure mode and faster due to throughput rates between two wireless network adaptors (Sturmer, 2020). The throwbacks associated with infrastructure mode include lower network speed, which occurs due to the time it takes to send signals to the access point before reaching its destination. The infrastructure throwback is expenses associated with purchasing access points. Ad hoc throwbacks include the inability to support wireless and multiple clients limiting its use in a large corporate network.
