Assignment 1
Lethal violence in America is a big problem. It is usually identified as homicide, which is a very serious crime. In criminal law, homicide refers to the act of one human being killing another. The rate of homicides is on the increase especially in big cities. A new report presented by the Council on Criminal Justice found that the rate of homicide rose sharply this summer in twenty-seven cities across the US. For instance, between June and August 2020, the rates of homicide augmented by 53 percent over a similar period in 2019 and the rate of murders increased by 15% countrywide in the first 6 months of 2020 (Abt, Rosenfeld & Lopez, 2020). Statistics such as these illustrate the severity of lethal violence. Therefore, resources directed toward other crimes detract from the effort to decrease homicide.
Assignment 2
Implementing the tenets of this philosophy may not be easy. This can be attributed to the many challenges brought about by multicultural composition of the community and the police. For instance, lack of organizational commitment and cultural change, language barriers, lack of flexibility, control and tailoring at neighborhood level as well as failing to recognize the historical lack of trust between police and certain communities are some of the factors that can make it hard to implement the philosophy (Brogden & Nijhar, 2013). The police subculture may further put the feasibility of this philosophy in jeopardy. The police tend to perceive members of the public as untrustworthy, and this may influence officers to implement community policing without the community’s contribution.
Assignment 3
In utilizing the term prisonization, D. Clemmer referred to the process through which inmates acknowledge the culture and social life of prison society (Hutton & Moran, 2019). Prisonization does not affect all prisoners in a similar way. The effect of prisonization depends on the personalities of inmates and the extent and type of relationships they maintain with people outside the prison. For instance, inmates who have the innate tendency to adhere to rules have a higher probability of opposing the subculture compared to those that have a disregard for rules. In addition, inmates who maintain strong and frequent contact with people outside the prison will also not easily adopt the prison subculture.
