Leadership
The leadership style that I will use is transformational leadership. This is a form of leadership where a leader works collaboratively with staff to recognize the change that is needed, develop a vision to steer the change via encouragement, and execute change together with dedicated group members (Shelton, 2012). In transformational leadership, the leader encourages, motivates and inspires employees to innovate and develop change that will assist grow and shape the future success of the organization. I believe this kind of leadership style will work best for me because it will give me the chance to be perceptive to both the personal and professional needs of workers in the prison by using empathy, promoting positive thinking and two-way communication, and creating a clear vision of the goal and direction of the prison’s mission (Gilbert, 2012).
Through transformational leadership, I will be able to empower prison employees to accept the mission of the facility in correcting socially unacceptable criminal conducts via rehabilitative means and efforts, develop a rehabilitative atmosphere that is sound and therapeutic, and offer opportunities for prisoners to get social values and skills needed to become productive members of society. Importantly, transformational leadership will help me inspire correctional staff not to be just followers and subordinates, but empower them by mentoring and coaching them to act and behave like leaders (Medcalf & Gilbert, 2015). I will also be able to work to solve issues at the prison that could negatively cause employee stress, morale and job satisfaction. To reduce liability, I will create uniform guidelines for correctional staff for performing job responsibilities and a set of policies that cover topics like workplace conduct, and expectations for staff. This way, the staff will know what their roles are and what is needed from them. This will go a long way in ensuring staff do not engage in behaviour that will bring liability to the prison.
