Instructions and Rubric
The purpose of the journal assignment is to consistently reflect on the insights you gain
throughout the semester. It also gives you the freedom to examine concepts that you find
especially interesting in greater depth. Your journal should consist of one entry for each module.
Each of your 10 entries should include:
1. Title: Identify the topic for the week (i.e., Infancy, Early Childhood, Adolescence)) at the top
of a new page and in bold font.
2. Reflection: Provide a 2-3 paragraph reflection. Your writing should NOT be a summary or
list of everything you learned from the module. Instead, it should be focused on one or
more of the following prompts:
• How might you use the knowledge gained from the material in this module in your
life and/or career? Be specific and use examples if appropriate.
• What from the material in this module are you most likely to remember years from
now and why?
• What question(s) do you still have regarding the material from this module?
Attempt to answer your own question(s) by seeking out additional scholarly sources
(i.e. peer-reviewed articles). Explain your findings.
• How has what you have learned in this module added to your understanding of
something you have already studied in this or other courses? Be specific.
3. College-level writing: Your writing should contain fully developed sentences and
paragraphs (5-8 sentences each), be free of spelling/grammar/organizational errors, be
single spaced, and use proper citations where appropriate. Because this is reflective
writing, you should not collaborate with others and your writing should be your own (i.e.,
not taken word-for-word from other sources). Finally, be mindful of the academic honesty
policy located in the syllabus, including what constitutes plagiarism and cheating.
Your completed journal with all 10 entries should be typed and submitted as a single Microsoft
Word or PDF file (not multiple documents) at the end of the semester (see schedule for due date).
Other file extensions (i.e., .pages) are not compatible with the software I use. Hand-written or
emailed journals will not be accepted for credit.
