Barriers of Evidence-Based Practice to the Nurse Leader
A nurse leader is a person responsible for influencing others to participate and improve the implementation of quality patient care in hospitals. They are tasked with ensuring evidence based-practice works in hospitals to facilitate proper patient care. However, the nurse leader faces some challenges in implementing evidence-based practice.
First, the nurse leader is limited to application of evidence-based research as a result of institutional barriers. These barriers involve lack of adequate resources, poor access to information and unsupportive staff members. Inadequate resources make the nurse leader fail to implement the evidence practice fully (Schaefer & Welton, 2018) . Also, members of staff lack unity and trust towards the nurse leader making it impossible to implement evidence based practice. Secondly, implementing evidence-based practice is limited by interdisciplinary barriers. In this case, there is lack of communication between clinical leadership and nursing education which creates a problem in implementation of evidence-based practice.
Strategies to Overcome the Barriers
The nurse leader needs to mobilize more resources from the government and other stakeholders to ensure the system is fully implemented. The nurse leader needs to ensure there are enough nurses and medical practitioners who are well equipped towards ensuring and implementing evidence-based practice to nursing to improve patient care (Walvoord, 2018). Also, the nurse leader needs to create avenues for access and storage of information which may directly influence the adoption of evidence-based practice. Moreover, the nurse leader needs to improve communication with other leaders as well as create partnership with medical institutions top spur knowledge for evidence-based practice. Therefore, due to this it would be easier to implement the system and improve patient care. To guarantee that the system is properly implemented, the nurse leader must gather more resources from the government and other partners. The nurse leader must guarantee that there are enough nurses and medical practitioners who are well-equipped to ensure and execute evidence-based nursing practice in order to improve patient care (Walvoord, 2018). In addition, the nurse leader must establish channels for information access and storage, which may have a direct impact on the adoption of evidence-based practice.
Barriers to Evidence-Based Practice to the Bedside Nurse
A bedside nurse is a nurse responsible for taking care of the patient and ensures that the patient needs are attended to facilitate quick recovery without any delay. They are the ones who apply evidence-based practice in provision of patient care as it is part of their day-to-day duties in the nursing practice. Bedside nurses, also encounter challenges in the use of evidence-based practice approach to patient care.
To begin with, the hospitals may lack enough tools or capacity to implement the evidence-based practice. In this case, the bedside nurses lack the necessary amenities which are to be used in the implementation of this approach to care. The hospital may lack proper tools and equipment to perform tests so as to reach at evidence based approach to care (Melnyk et al., 2018). On the other hand, the nurses may be barred by the lack of skills and expertise to perform the necessary procedures under evidence-based practice. Most of the medical education is vested in specialized clinical officers and medical practitioners such as opticians, physicians, dentists and surgeons which may limit patient care provision by nurses,
Strategies to Overcome the Barriers
Bedside nurses can overcome these barriers by calling on the nurse leadership to avail the necessary tools and equipment for performing evidence-based practice procedures, thus, hospitals need to be quipped to facilitate adequate provision of patient care. Moreover, nurses need to brainstorm and acquire knowledge and education on the proper methods of practicing evidence based-practice (Yoo et al., 2019). Therefore, this will minimize on the lack of expertise and required knowledge to administer care. All patients will be satisfied with care delivery and this will facilitate quick recovery and better quality healthcare services.
All in all, both nurse leaders and bedside nurse are facing a challenge in the application of evidence-based practice. All stakeholders in the nursing practice including the government needs to put in place proper measures to address the challenges. The stakeholders can increase support, provide partnership between nursing practice and nursing education, educate bedside nurses and provide access to information.
