Individualized Practicum Learning Objectives

Individualized Practicum Learning Objectives: Explain three Individualized Practicum Learning Objectives that address your self-assessment of the skills found in the Clinical Skills Self-Assessment, are SMART (i.e., Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-focused, Time-focused), and meet the requirements for this course. Each Practicum Learning Objective must describe planned activities, mode of assessment, and PRAC course outcome(s) addressed for the skills you would like to improve from your self-assessment.

Select one nursing theory and one counseling/psychotherapy theory to best guide your clinical practice, explaining these 2 chosen theories with supporting evidenced-based literature.

Individualized Practicum Learning Objectives

Objective 1: Improve my ability to collect a nursing history.

Planned activities:

Observe experienced nurses as they collect nursing histories.
Practice collecting nursing histories on my own, with feedback from my clinical instructor.
Review the literature on nursing history taking.
Mode of assessment:

My clinical instructor will observe me collecting nursing histories and provide feedback.
I will complete a self-assessment of my skills in collecting nursing histories.

PRAC 1.1: Demonstrate the ability to collect a nursing history.
PRAC 1.2: Analyze the data collected from a nursing history.
Objective 2: Improve my ability to perform a physical assessment.

Planned activities:

Observe experienced nurses as they perform physical assessments.
Practice performing physical assessments on my own, with feedback from my clinical instructor.
Review the literature on physical assessment.
Mode of assessment:

My clinical instructor will observe me performing physical assessments and provide feedback.
I will complete a self-assessment of my skills in performing physical assessments.
PRAC course outcome(s) addressed:

PRAC 2.1: Demonstrate the ability to perform a physical assessment.
PRAC 2.2: Interpret the data collected from a physical assessment.
Objective 3: Improve my ability to communicate effectively with patients and their families.

Planned activities:

Observe experienced nurses as they communicate with patients and their families.
Practice communicating with patients and their families, with feedback from my clinical instructor.
Review the literature on communication in healthcare.
Mode of assessment:

My clinical instructor will observe me communicating with patients and their families and provide feedback.
I will complete a self-assessment of my skills in communicating with patients and their families.
PRAC course outcome(s) addressed:

PRAC 3.1: Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with patients and their families.
PRAC 3.2: Use communication to promote patient safety and improve patient outcomes.
Nursing Theory

The nursing theory that I will use to guide my clinical practice is Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory of Nursing. This theory is based on the idea that the nurse-patient relationship is the foundation of nursing care. The nurse and patient work together to achieve the patient’s goals, and the nurse uses their interpersonal skills to create a safe and supportive environment for the patient.

Counseling/Psychotherapy Theory

The counseling/psychotherapy theory that I will use to guide my clinical practice is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented therapy that focuses on changing the patient’s thoughts and behaviors. CBT has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Evidence-Based Literature

The following evidence-based literature supports the use of Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory of Nursing and CBT in clinical practice:

Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory of Nursing:
A study published in the Journal of Nursing Scholarship found that nurses who used Peplau’s theory in their practice had higher patient satisfaction scores than nurses who did not use the theory.
A study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing found that nurses who used Peplau’s theory in their practice were more effective at promoting patient self-care.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:
A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that CBT is an effective treatment for depression.
A study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety.
I believe that these two theories will provide me with a strong foundation for providing high-quality nursing care.
