I found this course to be interesting and of great benefit in my learning as it provides profound knowledge and understanding of movie characters with their social, political, and physical role during their period of performance. This class provided me with an opportunity to study different movie characters and their styles of performance and how they are features in different situations. With the different movies watched, the class enables the learners to understand the role of the movies and different characters in the shaping of our society.
The essay that I found to be most interesting is the one on “Comparing Two Actors From Different Period of Time”. This essay is clearly presented on a comparison of two characters Marilyn Monroe in the film “Some Like It Hot” and Jack Nicholson in “The Shining”. The essay has also presented the social role of the two characters which mainly is to impact change in the society. This essay is an illustration of social norms on gender discrimination and disparity and the social evils happening in the current society like drug use, sexual abuse and homosexuality.
I, however, do not find the essay on “Modern Times 1936” by Charli Chaplain to be interesting in this class. The essay is too general and it’s more of political focus rather than focusing on social changes. It is presented in a context economic deprivation and has minimal impact on our social lives and therefore less effective in impacting change. Throughout this course, I found movie reviews and analysis as effective ways of learning and understanding our society.
In the future, I would propose that we make use of movies to enhance our learning especially on issues affecting our social lives. In this class, I have learned the effective role of movies and character performance as an art of teaching and shaping of our society. The class has therefore impacted my views and attitude toward movies and performance, enabling me to appreciate the educational role of characters in films.
