● The Gun-free Schools act of 1994 – requires every district receiving federal funds to create a one year mandatory expulsion for bringing a firearm to school Many schools broadly used this to create zero tolerance policies (Evans Crullar & Markowiz 2015).
● No child Left Behind Act (2001) – increased zero tolerance policies and tied it to educational performance.
•Talk about the impact on the schools system, educational systems, teachers, students, things like that.
•Talk about the Supreme Court decision that was laid out and about the responses by the different institutions. For example, how education institutions responded, how families responded and how did police respond ect.
•Explain the history and context of the policy and how it relates to the social problem affecting African American families.

These are some of the things I look for in APA style:
● 12 point font size
● Times New Roman Font
● Title Page with “Running head: …” in the margin. It should appear like this: “Running head: SHORT ALL CAPS TITLE” Fifty characters (that includes spaces and punctuation) is the maximum, according to the APA style manual (2010, p. 229). It should be flush left, half inch from the top.
● Page header: Each page header has the title in all caps, starting from the left margin, with the page number flush right, all on the same line. The header matches what was used on Page 1 but the words: “Running head:” is omitted for the remainder of the pages.
● 1 inch margins on all sides
● Double spaced
● Paragraph indentation — Paragraphs in the body of the paper are indented 5-7 spaces or one tab stop.
● Page number on every page (just the number please, nothing else). Page numbers should have the number only (APA, 2010, p. 41) and should be flush right, half inch from the top on the same line.
● Title Page
● Title — Title information should include the title of the paper, your name, and your institutional affiliation. “The recommended length for a title is no more than 12 words,” (APA, 2010, p. 23). “A title should summarize the main idea of the manuscript simply and, if possible, with style,” (APA, 2010, p. 23). It should be double spaced, centered, in the upper half of the page. Please use Times new Roman, 12 point font, with no bold face, no italics, no underlining, or abnormal font size.
● Reference page
● Justification — “Do not justify lines,” (APA, 2010, p. 229). I should be ragged right.
● Contractions — Please refrain from the use of contractions in academic writing.
● Spacing — In general, you want one space after a period. When citing, you want the parentheses to come before the period (APA, 2010).
● Numbers — The general rule governing APA style on the use of numbers is to use numerals to express numbers 10 and above and words to express numbers below 10. Sections 4.31 – 4.34 expand on this rule and state exceptions and special usages. “Use words to express any number that begins a sentence, title, or text heading,” (APA, 2010, p. 112). This can be found in section 4.32.
● In-text citations — If this citation took place outside of the parentheses, then you would use the word “and.” Since it takes place inside the parentheses, you use the ampersand “&.” See APA style, 2010, p. 177 for more details.
● In-text citations and multiple authors — Regardless of the medium of the source, all sources with three authors or more are now attributed using the name of the first author followed by “et al.” (Roberti et al., 2012).
● Multiple in-text citations — When using two separate citations to support an idea, please separate them using a semicolon (APA, 2010, p. 178).
● Quotations — Direct quotations include the author (or title if no author), the date, and specific part of the source (page #, paragraph # or section title). If you are to use a quotation, please use the quote sandwich method. See Blackboard for details.
● Not using the word “I” in your paper. That means, no “I think that …”
● When writing references for books, please follow this format:
Author, A. A. (Year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle. Publisher Name.
Stoneman, R. (2008). Alexander the Great: A life in legend. Yale University Press.
● When writing references for movies, please follow this format:
Director, D. D. (Director). (Date of publication). Title of motion picture [Film]. Production company.
Loyd, P. (Director). (2008). Mamma mia! [Film]. Universal Pictures.
