Evaluation Essay Assignment

Evaluation Essay Assignment

Assignment:
We have the opportunity to select and evaluate a subject in order to present our overall assessment by supporting it with criteria and evidence. The essay will be approximately 3-5 pages in length, incorporate at least one source, and have a Works Cited page.

Note: Do not use tertiary sources (dictionaries, encyclopedias, study guides, etc.). Also, any essay that does not have a Works Cited page will have the final grade lowered by one letter.

Rationale:
The skills used in this assignment are essential creating a coherent essay based on criteria, justification, and evidence as well as creating a discussion based on a controlling idea (e.g., thesis).

Process:
1. Select a subject with which you’re familiar that also falls under one of the following categories: commercial product/service, work of art, or performance.

2. Determine 3-5 criteria by which to evaluate the subject as well as why they are important. Afterwards, assess to what degree the subject meets each standard.

3. Formulate a thesis that represents your overall assessment (judgment) about the subject.

4. Construct a 3-5 page evaluation essay presents your thesis and supports it with criteria, justification, and evidence.

Essay Organization/Structure:
Because this essay is arranged deductively, we’ll use the following structure:

Introductory paragraph(s): Provide an engaging lead, background information about the subject, and thesis.

Body paragraphs: For each body paragraph, provide a standard, its justification, your assessment, and present how the subject did/didn’t meet the standard by giving evidence. *Note: You will use transitions between body paragraphs.

Conclusion: Provide an ending that “wraps up” the discussion rather than summarizes it.

Keep in Mind:
Remember that we must have a fair evaluation, which means we determine the criteria before we evaluate our subject. As such, we must ask ourselves:

● What is the general subject?
● What are the criteria?
● Why are the criteria important?
● What is the specific subject?
● How does the subject meet/not meet each standard?
● What is my overall thesis?

Likewise, we must determine an organizational strategy to help organize our body paragraphs–chronological, spatial, topical, or order of importance. Doing so not only helps in evaluating the subject but also in deciding which transitions to use.

Lastly, we may evaluate two subjects if we’d like. However, keep in mind that we’re not comparing the subjects to each other but rather presenting how each subject met or didn’t meet each standard, which then forms our overall thesis (judgment).

Additional Reminders:
The thesis needs to provide a one-sentence summary of our overall assessment and include the subject being evaluated. Because of this, we must use terms that express “good,” “bad,” or “average.”

Below are examples of possible thesis statements:
1. While the Matrix has strong special effects, overall this is a dull movie.
2. Avatar is a brilliant film.
3. Modern Strike Online utterly fails as a mobile game.

Each body paragraph should use the following structure:
● First (topic) sentence: Provide a transition and the standard being discussed.
● Second sentence: State why the standard is important.
● Third sentence: Indicate whether the subject meets the standard (assessment).
● Additional sentences: Provide evidence and/or examples that demonstrate how the subject meets/doesn’t meet the standard.

Effective Essay:
An effective essay will have the following characteristics:
❏ A narrowed scope and a clear sense of purpose and focus
❏ Background information about the subject
❏ A clearly identifiable umbrella thesis
❏ Topic sentences that present the main points
❏ Appropriate evidence–research information, experience, and/or observations
❏ An organizational structure appropriate to purpose, audience, and context
❏ Academic language and style appropriate to the audience and context
❏ Proper mechanics (spelling, grammar, punctuation)and Works Cited Page

Format and Design:
Your essay will follow these format and design requirements:
❏ Title the essay using standard capitalization
❏ The essay should be double spaced.
❏ Use 11 or 12-point type size (Times New Roman, Calibri, or Cambria)
❏ The Works Cited page begins on a separate page after the essay

Evaluation Criteria:
The assignment will be evaluated by the following. *Note: Review the “Grading Rubric” document for additional criteria.
