Discussion Response

Response 1:
I believe that any death of a loved one is tragic, but in my personal opinion a death of a child is one of the most tragic losses. Even if the child was born with a chronic illness I think that parents never lose hope that one day there will be a cure, and their child will live a long life. The difference between a chronic illness and a sudden death due to an accident is that the parents may have had time to say goodbye to their child, while those of the child in the accident did not. On the other hand, the child with the chronic illness may have been suffering for a long time, while the child who died in an accident may have experienced a sudden death. However, I do not think this makes the death any easier to accept. I think that is it important as part of the healthcare team to be there for the family during the illness and shortly after the death. Parents who lose their children are impacted negatively both physically and mentally. They stop taking care of their health and work because of their emotional distress. These are the moments that healthcare staff must intervene. Showing support, compassion, trust, respect and honest communication is key to helping these parents get back on their feet (October et al., 2018). Follow up meetings with the parents are important in order for them to seek safe, professional help. From here, I could refer them to support groups, and therapists that can help them cope with things beyond my scope of knowledge. I think the most important thing at this moment is to just show them that you care and that they are not alone. Listen with compassion and be mindful that the grieving process is different for everyone.
Response 2:
Is the death of a child more tragic than the death of a middle-aged adult or an older adult?
Even though the loss of a loved one is always hard; For me, the death of a child is more tragic than an adult death. It is against the natural process of aging and dying old. It may be because we do not expect death at a young age. Accepting a child’s death would be more difficult for parents, it is a shocking incidence and hard to believe. Sometimes the death of a child will lead to long and complicated grief. Some parents will not be able to get over it. Grief is a normal response when someone loses a loved one, however, the death of a child is the most devastating grief for parents and families. Time Magazine has interviewed parents who lost a child in a school shooting incidence. More than half of the interviewed parents explained a permanent profound loss of self after their child’s death (Edwards, 2018).
What if the child has a chronic condition and the adult experiences sudden death due to an accident?
Sudden death due to an accident is devastating whether the person is a child or an adult. Accidental death that happens unexpectedly will result in a sudden and more intense shock. When a child is diagnosed with a chronic disease, the parents will be in a state of grieve that will continue until the death of the child. Yet, I do still believe that a child’s death due to an accident or chronic health condition is more tragic, even though they both have severe effects on the family. Any kind of child loss would be very difficult to accept.

What actions would you take with the parents whose child has died-does it matter if the child was ill or it was a sudden death? Describe your communication with the parents.
Whether the child was ill, or it is a sudden death it would be a very difficult time for the parents. Nurses have an important role in supporting parents who are in difficult a time. Grieving parents desire caring, sensitive care that respect their wish, their culture and meets their needs (Mullen et al., 2018). As nurses, we should acknowledge their lose and morally support them, care for they need and answer their questions, and give them space when needed. The approach I will follow in this case is that I make them feel my sympathy and assure them that I will be available whenever they need my support.
