Academic Integrity
Academic integrity entails, meaning honesty in one’s schoolwork. It is usually an ethical code and signifies that students are attaining their academic achievements and failures justly. Academic dishonesty, cheating in the test, stealing other people’s work without citing the sources, not referencing the originals, all references should be included and appropriately cited to give credit to the other. Therefore, academic integrity is a form of ethical behavior and usually involves honesty and fairness in students’ academic work. Students have a responsibility to understand the policy and the regulation that govern academic integrity. Students usually exercise academic integrity by citing their sources correctly, completing their assignments independently, and ensuring that they uphold integrity in their work even under demanding times. The six values that act as the cornerstone of academic integrity are trust, responsibility, courage, honesty, respect, and fairness.
Cheating is a form of academic dishonesty and entails copying other people’s work or the attempted use of unauthorized material, notes, the information in intellectual activity. for instance, an individual can consider using phones in an exam room. On the other hand, plagiarism is the usage and submission of other people’s ideas, work, and results without acknowledging them in work through proper citation. Plagiarism occurs when a person paraphrases other people’s work without referencing them. Citing enables the instructors and the audience to trace the sources of the information. This allows the instructor to distinguish between individual original work and the borrowed information.
Another form of academic dishonesty is an improper collaboration that involves sharing individual assignment with other students to copy. It also occurs when students work together without the degree of the permissible collaboration set out by the instructor. Instructors typically allow collaboration based on what they intend to assess and accomplish through a specific assignment. Students also have a habit of fabrication and changing information to fit in their academics exercise or to acquire unfair academic benefits. This can involve tampering with assignments that have already been marked to gain unfair advantage violates academic integrity policy. Other forms of academic dishonesty include multiple submissions and contract cheating.
Students must understand the central guidelines about academic integrity. There should be a commitment to fostering uprightness, fairness, and right behavior in their academic work through prevention and education.
One way of promoting academic integrity among students is through educating them on the repercussion of committing academic dishonesty. Every institution usually sets the rules governing academic integrity and their repercussion when a student violates them (MacEwan University,2013). Academic integrity encompasses all the educational integrity principles in their work and refraining from helping others attempting to violate the policy. An important point to note is that students must contact the academic integrity office to seek clarification on the guidelines and be informed on various ways of avoiding academic dishonesty. Students need to manage their time well to avoid the last-minute rush, which often leads to academic dishonesty. Good time management gives a student adequate time to do their assignment without cheating.
Plagiarism is the most serious and most common form of intellectual theft. Students need to know how to avoid plagiarism in their academic work. Taking other people’s work and calling it’s your own is an example of plagiarism. Students need to keep track of the sources and learn how to cite them properly. Also, numerous academic dishonesty incidents occur when students do not seek clarification on how to do their work. For instance, if they fail to cite sources correctly while borrowing information from the website. The student should consider seeking clarification from instructors regarding the class policies when assignment expectation is unclear.
Plagiarism is a serious academic crime. The plagiarism spectrum provides a guideline for students and educators in identifying the different forms of plagiarism. Clone is the most common form of plagiarism and entails submitting another person’s real academic work without alteration. CTRL-C involves submitting academic work in which the significant part of the work belongs to a single source without any modification. Find-replace encompasses changing the main words and expressions and retaining the critical content of the authorities (MacEwan University, 2013). A remix is paraphrasing various sources to fit a particular content that represents an academic offense.
Other forms of plagiarism encompass recycling, which involves borrowing openhandedly from an individual previous work without citing the source. Hybrid involves combining correctly cited sources with uncited work which is copied. Mashup represents work that is composed of various copied materials without citing the sources correctly. The 404ERROR is another type of plagiarism that includes citations to non-existent or inaccurate information Simultaneously, the Aggregator entails including correct citation to sources when the paper is containing almost zero original work (Tangney, 2014). The last form of plagiarism from the spectrum is retweeted, which involves the use of proper citation but using most of the text’s original wording and organization. Paraphrasing other people’s work can avoid these forms of plagiarism and citing the sources appropriately.
In conclusion, academic dishonest includes cheating, plagiarizing, improper collaboration, altering and fabricating materials, helping others in cheating, and submitting similar work in different courses. Students must uphold academic integrity and are required to inform the Academic Integrity Council when academic dishonesty arises. Further, Students are required to pledge ownership of their work.
