Define and discuss the purpose of the First Continental Congress and the three significant accomplishments of this Congress. Your initial discussion board response must have 3 APA references.
The First Continental Congress was a meeting of representatives from the thirteen British colonies in North America that met from September 5 to October 26, 1774, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The purpose of the Congress was to discuss and coordinate a response to the Coercive Acts, a series of laws passed by the British government in 1774 in response to the Boston Tea Party. The Congress sought to find a unified response to these laws and to defend the rights and liberties of the colonists.
Three significant accomplishments of the First Continental Congress include:
The Declaration of Rights and Grievances: This document outlined the rights and liberties of the colonists and the ways in which they felt these rights had been violated by the British government. It was adopted by the Congress on October 14, 1774.
The Association: This agreement, adopted by the Congress on October 20, 1774, called for the colonies to boycott British goods and to form a non-importation, non-exportation, and non-consumption agreement until the Coercive Acts were repealed.
The formation of the Continental Army: On June 14, 1775, the Congress formed the Continental Army, which was to be a unified military force composed of soldiers from the different colonies. This was a significant step towards the colonies’ eventual separation from British rule.
