CSI: Effect on Offenders?
If it was proved that television shows like CSI assist criminals to avoid apprehension, it is morally permissible to prohibit them. This is according to the principle of utility. This principle posits that the right action is the one that is the one that generates the best results/consequences (Mill, 2008). Therefore, in this case, prohibiting the CSI show will likely lead to the apprehension of more offenders. Some of the alternatives for addressing the possibility in this case include encouraging rape victims to report offenders and enacting laws that seek to protect survivors.
The Bad Samaritan
David’s conduct is not morally permissible. The principle of utility indicates the right action is the one that generates the best consequences. In this case, the right action would have been for David to help the 7-year old girl as doing so would have prevented her from being molested and eventually being killed by Jeremy; this kind of action would have thus generated the best consequences. The decision of the university chancellor is morally permissible. Virtue ethics put emphasis on virtues of mind, character and sense of honesty (Gardiner, 2018). In this case, the university chancellor applied the sense of honesty; he had no grounds to expel David since the court had found that his actions did not violate the law.
A Flexible Expense Account
According to formalism, Clyde’s actions are not morally permissible. Formalism defines morals on the basis of logic and reason, and as such, something if defined as right or wrong, it is defined as wrong or right all the time (Pollock, 2013). Lying is considered to be wrong at all times. Therefore, Clyde’s action of lying about the $300 dollars in the expense account was just wrong. In my opinion, Clyde should be punished. Nothing justifies his actions. He failed to exercise honesty and integrity in his dealings.
