Conflict Resolution

Overview: In your textbook, please review and complete the Assignment 9A: Process Analysis of A Real Conflict (p. 468 – 469). The focus of the assignment is not the analysis of the pros and cons of each position being facilitated , but rather the approach, skills, and strategies used by the “facilitator” in relation to the process and challenges raised during the interaction.

Instructions: This assignment has five key sections. Please include the section headings below to organize your work. Assignment is 100 points and all students will write at least 6 pages, not including cover and reference pages. Please include the video link you reviewed in your reference page. When completing this Assignment, please specifically address the sub-questions for each of the main 5 sections below, see detailed questions on page 469. The common mistake students make is not addressing each sub-question (especially in the introduction section to set the foundation for this assignment ) ; this will impact your grade; these are very important questions in the ” introduction” section . Each section should be written in paragraph form, I do not want a list of questions and answers; this is an essay (a paper) with sections. Students can include sub-headings, under the major headings, to further organize their content. Make it easy to read your paper and find content; this is good writing organization:

1. Introduction: ( see 9A sub-questions for this section)

2. Conflicts: (see 9A sub-questions for this section)

3. Challenges: (see 9A sub-questions for this section)

4. Alternatives: (see 9A sub-questions for this section)

5. Self- reflection (this section is not part of 9A; however, answer the following question): What did you learn about this process and/or chapter?

6. Assignment 9A: Process Analysis of a Real Conflict

7. For this assignment, you will need to use a recording of a public process involving a facilitator and two or more parties discussing a controversial issue. 10 This could include a debate or roundtable discussion of current events, or coverage of a decision-making body’s actual meeting. Check television listings or online sources to help you identify an interesting process to analyze (e.g., congressional debates or hearings, local school board meetings, or discussions among professionals who are expressing conflicting opinions). As you review the video of this process, take notes on the process issues that arise, as well as the ways in which the facilitator uses certain skills and strategies to deal with these issues.

8. Your written process analysis should include the following information:

9. 1. INTRODUCTION: What was the stated purpose of the process? Who was present at the meeting (describe their roles or positions, rather than just their individual names)? What term was used to describe the facilitator’s role (e.g., moderator, chair, speaker, mayor)? What type of group was this? What was the group’s current stage of development? Which approach to group facilitation did the facilitator use? Provide brief explanations for each of your answers (e.g., how did you decide that the group was using an interest-based, problem-solving, or other approach?). [1 to 2 pages]

10. 2. CONFLICTS: Describe the types of conflicts that were raised in this process (e.g., differences over beliefs, values, limited resources, miscommunication, identities). Which skills and strategies did the facilitator attempt to use in order to deal with these differences? [2 to 3 pages]

11. 3. CHALLENGES: What specific challenges did the facilitator have to pre-empt or deal with? Which skills and strategies did the facilitator use to deal with each of these? [2 to 3 pages]

12. 4. ALTERNATIVE: Identify another approach the facilitator could have used to help the participants manage their conflict more effectively. Explain why you think this approach would be more appropriate or effective. Provide examples of how the facilitator could use specific skills and strategies to implement this approach, given the same conflicts and challenges that you describe in Points 2 and 3. What are the risks or potential downsides of using this type of approach? [2 to 3 pages]

13. 5. REFERENCES: List the books, articles, and other scholarly CR resources cited in your analysis. [5 to 8 references]

————————-

Overview: Please examine and complete Assignment 9A: Process Analysis of a Real Conflict in your textbook (p. 468 – 469). The assignment’s focus is not on analyzing the advantages and cons of each perspective being facilitated, but rather on the “facilitator’s” attitude, skills, and techniques in connection to the process and issues generated during the interaction.

This assignment is divided into five components. Please use the section headings listed below to help you arrange your work. The assignment is worth 100 points, and each student is required to produce at least 6 pages, not including the cover and reference pages. Please provide the video link that you watched in your reference page. Please address the sub-questions for each of the major 5 parts below when completing this Assignment.
