Conflict Journal Assignment
Styles
Each student will complete one journal according to the instructions below and upload it into Blackboard under the Journal tab by the deadline indicated on the syllabus. The rating rubric for the journal assignment is provided in Blackboard under the Assignments and Tests tab. The journals are confidential and are reviewed only by the professor.
Assignment Requirements:
1. Each student must identify one personal or professional conflict that will be sufficient to write about in the journal. 2. Each student will analyze the conflict according to the six-step mediation model studied in class. This conflict can be one that occurred in the past (personal or professional) or one that the student is currently experiencing personally or professionally. 3. For a conflict that occurred in the past, the student will analyze the conflict, step-by-step, and write about how the conflict could have been handled differently to produce a more desirable outcome for all parties. For a current conflict, the student will analyze the conflict, step-by-step, and write about what he or she would do as the mediator to resolve the conflict to a successful conclusion. For a past conflict, the student will step-by-step analyze the conflict and write about how the conflict could have been handled differently to produce a more desirable outcome for all parties. For a current conflict, the student will step-by-step analyze the conflict and write about what he or she would do as the mediator to successfully resolve the conflict. 4. The journal should be written in APA style and should be approximately 2-3 written pages in length. An APA cover page is not required for this assignment. Students may write in 1st person since this is a journal based on a personal/professional experience. Although this is an informal writing assignment, proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation are required. 5. This journal exercise is intended to allow the student to reflect on a past conflict and gain a different perspective on how it could have been handled or to allow the student to objectively view a current conflict and brainstorm a variety of solutions for it.
