CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Water is one of the world’s most valuable resources. It is a basic necessity of life for both plants and animals. Mankind cannot, in fact, survive without water as even the human body is made up of about 70% water. Water resources are becoming increasingly scarce in many parts of the world due to development, increased demand, climate change and resulting drought and explosive population growth. The availability of a reliable and clean supply of water is one of the most important determinants of our health. WHO (World Health Organisation) explains that diseases related to drinking-water contamination represent a major burden on human health and the interventions to improve the quality of drinking-water provide significant benefits to health. Water is the most abundant liquid on earth it covers three quarters of the earth surface. Oceans cover 72% of the earth and the average depth is 2.5 miles. The oceans are the source of 97% of all water. The rest consist of 2.1% in glaciers, 0.6% fresh water in lakes and rivers 0.6% ground waters and 0.1% in brine well and brackish waters. The human needs about 2-10 litres of water per day for normal physiological functions, depending on climate and workload. About 1 litre of water is provided by daily food consumption. The total water consumption per capita per day is determined by a number of factors, such as availability, quality, cost, income, size of family, cultural habits, standard of living, ways and means of water distribution and climate (World Bank Water Research Team, 1993).
Almost every nook and cranny in Nigeria is littered with sachet water nylon, popularly called “pure water”, As noted by Edoga et al. (2008), about 70 percent of Nigerian adults drink at least a sachet of pure water per day resulting in about 50 to 60 million used daily across the country. this has significant impact on the economy of Nigeria.
Water has been identified to be very important to human existence because it is very necessary for survival. A reliable supply of clean wholesome water is crucial in an attempt to promote healthy living amongst the inhabitants of a well-defined geographical region (Mustapha and Adam, 1999).
In an attempt to proffer solution to water problem, it was estimated that 1.2 billion people around the world does not have access to clean safe water and about 2.5 billion people are not provided with adequate sanitation (Third World Water Forum, 2003). Majority of the affected people that lack access to clean safe water and adequate sanitation are located in the developing countries because the standard industrialized global model for safe water delivery and sanitation technology is not affordable (Gadgil and Derby, 2003).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Narrowing down to Nigeria, the supply or provision of public drinking water is an issue where by transporting of pure water from one distinct customer to another can incur cost of money spent,
Again the rate at which customers put calls across to drivers who are on motion distributing pure water from one customer to another, might result to accidents occurring because of lack of concentration when driving.
For these reason computerized method that takes inventory of customers’ demands can be used to easily reach out to everyone customer at their respective location.

1.6 Definition of Terms
Market System: A market system is the network of buyers, sellers and other actors that come together to trade in a given product or service.
Stock: a store or supply accumulated or available especially: the inventory of goods of a merchant or manufacturer
Water Supply: the obtaining of water for and its distribution to a town or city, as far as possible in sufficient quantity and of satisfactory quality.
Supply: the quantities of goods or services offered for sale at a particular time or at one price.
Marketing: refers to activities a company undertakes to promote the buying or selling of a product or service which includes advertising, selling and delivering products to consumers or other businesses. Some marketing is done by affiliates on behalf of a company.
Price: Price refers to how much the company will sell the product for. When establishing a price, companies must consider the unit cost price, marketing costs, and distribution expenses. Companies must also consider the price of competing products in the marketplace and whether their proposed price point is sufficient to represent a reasonable alternative for consumers.
Place: Place refers to the distribution of the product. Key considerations include whether the company will sell the product through a physical storefront, online, or through both distribution channels. When it’s sold in a storefront, what kind of physical product placement does it get? When it’s sold online, what kind of digital product placement does it get?
Product: Product refers to an item or items the business plans to offer to customers. The product should seek to fulfill an absence in the market, or fulfill consumer demand for a greater amount of a product already available. Before they can prepare an appropriate campaign, marketers need to understand what product is being sold, how it stands out from its competitors, whether the product can also be paired with a secondary product or product line, and whether there are substitute products in the market.
