Comparing Achilles and Hector

Comparing Achilles and Hector The Iliad show many male characters that follows the Greek culture. This culture is seen as these men try to display heroic spirit attributable to Greeks at that time. The two great warriors that are very prominent in this time are Achilles and Hector. Achilles was a key fighter in the army of Greece and was greatly honored in the army (Crompton 14). Hector on the other hand was a the greatest warrior in the Trojan army and was also the army commander.
These two warriors had many similarities as well as differences. The most striking similarity was that both were great worriers each commanding his army.
Both had risen to fame and pride and commanded admiration and influence. However, even with these similarities, these two heroes had a fair share of striking differences too.

One of the greatest similarities between these two warriors is that they both lead their armies to the Trojan War.

This war was long and led to a contest where hector faced off with Achilles.

On the other hand, Achilles does not have a family and his life is mostly about war. Hector’s life seems very full with a father who was the king, a brother and a wife. On the other hand, Achilles only had a mother Thetis and his friend Patroclus. He did not seem to share his time with his mother. He only went to his mother when he had something to complain about.
Hector seems more organizes and recognizes his role well. He is seen to devote his life in defending Troy and sharing with his family. On the other hand, Achilles seems to have problems knowing his role as he even abandons the battle at some pint.

Another difference is that Hector was a prince and was brought up to become the king of Troy. This is thought to have been the source of his discipline and focus to defend troy. On the other hand, Achilles was a warrior. He had sometimes refused to be regarded as one of the prince even though he was not born a prince. He is not seen to be either disciplined or even focused. This is seen by the fact that he even abandons the battle field at some point.
The most important in the list of their difference is their motivation for fighting. Achilles forth to expand the Greece empire and wanted to achieve that through killing Trojans to end the war. Hector didn’t fight for death but wanted Trojans to live free and maintain their freedom. Hector valued the lives and freedom of the Trojans and fought for the same. He believed in freedom and also peace between the two kingdoms.
