Combating marine debris pollution, a case study of Nigerian ports
The Nigerian marine sector is primarily responsible for the generation of solid trash, the majority of which consists of plastic products, abandoned aluminum wreckage and gear, steel cans, papers, and cardboard. When waste products of any kind make their way into the ocean, they contribute to the potentially harmful phenomenon known as marine debris contamination. The harmful effects of pollution caused by marine debris could be felt not only by aquatic species but also by people living in coastal areas and businesses that are dependent on the maritime environment. Marine debris pollution has emerged as a major problem in Nigeria, prompting calls for potential solutions.
Even while cruise ships have some of the responsibility for preventing and controlling the pollution caused by solid waste through measures such as source reduction and recycling, the problem continues to exist. The federal government has taken action to assist in the fight against pollution by launching a number of different programs.
For instance, the nation has ratified the MARPOL Convention, which aims to reduce the amount of pollution caused by ships’ solid waste and to bring it under control. Campaigns have been run by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), in conjunction with other government agencies, in an effort to raise community awareness about the issue of marine pollution.
In addition, NIMASA has developed programs and packages to educate the general public on the significance of environmental cleanup initiatives. The package focuses on demonstration initiatives to instill in people a positive frame of mind on issues relating to pollution and educate them on alternate and environmentally safe ways to dispose of waste.
A proposal for a collaboration between NIMASA and UNEP-GPA is currently in the process of being developed. This proposal will center on raising awareness about the pollution caused by marine solid waste and the development of a national grand plan to address the problem of marine debris pollution and appropriate ways to manage it.
