Children’s social care is responsible for supporting and looking out for children and young adults who are vulnerable, including the disabled and the mentally challenged, protecting them from any form of harm, whether it is from the parents, caregivers, or other people. Both national and local governments have increased their expenditure on the services, but still, the demand continues to surpass the efforts. While there are laws that define the role of duties of care service providers, the level and form of support given vary with different local governments.
Who are Children’s Social care services?
These are governmental organizations that are mandated to safeguard and protect the wellbeing of vulnerable children by providing a variety of services. There are various social care services for varying needs. For instance, social care services for the elderly aims at helping older people with mental and physical difficulties. All these departments work closely together to ensure that the child and the entire family receives the necessary support they need.
The decision to take a child into care can be challenging. If your local department at any point considers your child as suffering, or at risk of suffering significant harm due to neglect or abuse, it is their responsibility to intervene and take action to ensure that the child is protected. They must first conduct a child protection investigation before settling on any decision. They will, unless in particular circumstances, reach out to you as the parents or guardian to let you know what they are doing and what you can do.
If the child’s safety is questionable, they may take the child into protection pending investigation. Before launching a full investigation, the local authorities will apply for emergency protection to the court with reasonable cause to believe that child is being neglected or abused and is a risk of suffering significant harm if no action is taken. The authority will then work closely with the family to establish whether the child is safe to return home.

If it is established that the child cannot return home, the local authority must make alternative plans and find a permanent home for the child. At this stage, they might consider adoption as appropriate for the child. However, the final decision regarding adoption rests with the court, which must first consider all possible options and establish adoption as the best decision for the child.
