Mr. Sparrow is a widowed 84-year-old male who is the primary caregiver of his 43-ycar-old son with Down syndrome. They live in Houston, TX. Mr. Sparrow is legally blind, suffers from mild emphysema, and has a heart condition. His son, John, has arthritis and has been diagnosed with depression that began shortly after his mother’s death 20 months ago. There are two grown daughters who live in the county, but both work and have families of their own. Each daughter takes turns checking on father and brother, running errands and getting them to the family physician and respective specialists as needed. John attends a day care program for the developmentally challenged five clays a week.
Mr. Sparrow does his best to take care of his own and John’s needs but regularly burns meals, mixes up medicines, and struggles to help John understand the death of his mother. Mr. Sparrow has filed for state assistance, but has been on a waiting list for the past nine months. Although he has a moderate retirement income in addition to Social Security, he cannot afford the $40,000 annual cost of moving John to a group home.
Your post should include an in-depth discussion of the following:
1.Search the Web for for at least one Houston-based organization or professional association (relevant to the case) that may be available to meet the priority needs of each respective long-term care consumer, i.e., Mr. Sparrow and his son, John
2.Identify the following (via web search):What are the short-term needs in this particular case? Consider both the caregiver and the client in your assessment.
a. Descriptive information about the agency, organization, or professional association.
b. Listing of topic areas and informational sources that the agency, organization, or professional association might send to the long-term care consumer or caregiver. Be sure to ask if there are any costs associated with receiving the material.
3. What additional information is needed? Who should be contacted for further information?
4.What are the priorities in this case? Outline the problems, types and levels of assistance needed, and roles of client and caregiver(s).
5.Are there long-term needs that must be considered? What are they?
6.What information is critical to client/caregiver(s) in making informed decisions? Be sure to consider service options that are locally available, the quality of delivery systems, financial considerations, and eligibility requirements.
7. What quality-of-life indicators should be considered when assessing care to the client and caregiver(s)?
