Challenges in Business and IT Alignment
The benefits of a particular IT (Information Technology) can only be achieved through its proper alignment to the business goals and objectives. However, firms have increasingly faced daunting challenges to align properly the business goals and objectives to the IT and hence failing to explore and benefit from the advantages provided by IT in an organization.
Many firms often adopt effective IT that if properly integrated or fused into their strategies would be beneficial (Chiang & Nunez, 2013). However, most firms fail to implement effectively their strategic Information Technology plans due to inabilities to integrate or align the IT to their goals and objectives. Therefore, such companies fail to create the competitive edge compared to their competitors and hence are forced to exit the market. Strategic Information Technology is, therefore, a key determinant of the success of businesses, particularly where the industry is saturated. Thus, for any success-oriented firm, proper integration/fusion/ alignment of the IT to the business strategies (objectives and goals) are an inevitability for the business success. Firms that have managed to integrate or align their IT with the business goals and objectives have increasingly tightened their competitive advantages and hence thrive even in the saturated industries (Chan & Reich, 2007).
Thus, in this paper, the researcher seeks to investigate the challenges that firms face in their efforts or attempts to effectively align their IT frameworks to business strategies and then present efficient recommendations that if embraced by firm will see successful firms (Coltman, Tallon, Sharma, & Queiroz, 2015). To accomplish this, the researcher will use the mixed study design in which both primary and secondary data will be gathered and analyzed for effective recommendations. This will be effective in helping the researcher to access the existing literature so as to get the insights into the topic and then undertake the primary data collection to help fill the gaps in the literature.
