Barriers that APNs may face

Identify and describe practice barriers for all four APNs roles in your state and discuss these barriers on a state and national level. The four roles include the nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist.
Identify forms of competition on the state and national level that interfere with APN’s ability to practice independently.
Identify the specific lawmakers by name at the state level (i.e., key members of the state’s legislative branch and executive branch of government)
Discuss interest groups that exist at the state and national levels that influence APN policy.
Discuss methods used to influence change in policy in forms of competition, state legislative and executive branches of government and interest groups.
A scholarly resource must be used for EACH discussion question each week.

Barriers that APNs may face and ways in which they can work to overcome them.
Practice barriers for APNs can include limitations on scope of practice, lack of recognition or reimbursement for services provided, and lack of autonomy in decision-making. These barriers can vary from state to state, and can also vary depending on the specific role of the APN. For example, some states may have stricter regulations for nurse anesthetists than for nurse practitioners.
Competition for APNs can come from a variety of sources, including physicians, other APRNs, and non-healthcare professionals. This competition can make it difficult for APNs to establish and maintain their own practices, and can also limit their ability to provide certain services.
Interest groups that can influence APN policy include professional organizations such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), as well as groups representing physicians and other healthcare providers.
APNs can work to influence change in policy by becoming involved in advocacy and lobbying efforts, participating in political campaigns, and building relationships with key decision-makers such as lawmakers and regulators. They can also work with professional organizations and other interest groups to promote policies that support the advancement of the APN profession.
