Problem: for the frame below, assume L1=L2=10ft, L3=L4=12ft, h=10 ft; P1=P2=30k,
P3=15k; and E=30,000 ksi for all beams and columns. Also assume that beams have the
size of W24x84 for the two stories, W21x50 for the third story, and W14x211 for all the
columns.
Part a: use the portal method to solve the reaction forces and the moment diagram of the
frame. (15%)
Part b: the horizontal displacement of points T, O and J; (20%)
Part c: use SAP2000 to solve frame moment diagram and the frame deflection; (15%)
Part d: compare results (reaction forces, moment diagram and frame deflection) in part c
with those from part a and b; are they the same, why? If different, why? (20%).
Part e: change the member section to W24x104 for the beams in first and second story,
W21x73 for the beams in the third story, and W33x141 for all the columns. Redo-part c
for SAP 2000 analysis. (15%)
Part f: compare results (reaction forces, moment diagram and frame deflection) from part
e and part d; are they the same, why? If different, why? (15%).
Project Report Requirements:
1) Print your results clearly! Electronic copy of your report should be submitted

2) Project report must have the signatures of all group members! Otherwise, it will

3) The comparison should be presented in a tabulated way.
