In the Week 3 lesson, we’ve explored how to read and understand a scientific paper, and how reading a scientific paper is a completely different process from reading an article about science in a blog or newspaper (see the Raff article in Lesson 3). Raff (2018) provides us with some excellent tips for reading and understanding a scientific article. Let’s put these tips into action!
In this week’s assignment, I’d like to ask each of you to locate a research article that has been published in a refereed communication journal, such as Human Communication Research, Journal of Applied Communication, Journal of Communication, or Communication Monographs. Please select an article from 2016, 2017, 2018, or 2019.
Please attach this article to your submission, and discuss how you approached the reading of this article. Please comment specifically on the following questions:
1. Are there differences in the article’s introduction, rather than the abstract?
2. What is the big question in the article?
3. What is the research approach that the author takes? Is it qualitative, quantitative, or something else?
4. Briefly summarize the results of the article.
