Artificial Intelligence (AI) is intelligence portrayed by machines, unlike the inherent intelligence shown by humans and animals. As such, AI denotes to the replication of human intellect in machines that are programmed to apply thinking like human beings and imitate their actions (Kaplan, 2016). This terminology may also be used to describe a machine that displays characteristics linked to a human mind like learning and solving of problems. The ideal feature of AI is its capability of rationalizing and taking action that has the best chance of attaining a certain goal. The basis of AI is the principle that the intelligence of humans can be described in a manner that a machine can imitate easily and carry out tasks, ranging from those that are most simple to those that are even more intricate (Kaplan, 2016). The objectives of AI thus encompass reasoning, learning, and perception.
Machines have not taken over the world yet, but will likely do so in the coming years. Nonetheless, they are creeping their way into the lives of humans, impacting their way of life. From voice-powered assistants such as Alexa and Siri, to more basic technologies like behavioral algorithms, indicative searches and independently-powered self-driving cars (such as Tesla) showing powerful extrapolative capabilities, there are many other examples and applications of AI that are being used presently. Such examples include Netflix, Amazon.com, Google’s AI-Powered Predictions, Robo-readers, Facebook, SnapChat, smart email categorization, flying drones, Nest (Google), Cogito; the list is endless.
AI is impacting the future positively. AI is increasing human capabilities in considerable ways. For example, in stock exchanges, a huge part of human decision-making is being substituted by high-frequency trading (Dinh, 2019). AI is being utilized to solve a variety of environmental problems like climate change and prediction of natural disasters. AI is also expected to take over many dangerous jobs in the near future. Some companies are attempting to create a robot that can act as a companion to humans, and developed countries will increasingly utilize AI to enhance healthcare and expedite diagnoses (Dinh, 2019). With regards to businesses, AI is enabling individuals to utilize their creativity for confirmation, validity, control and security; as such, AI will increasingly be utilized this way in construction, manufacturing, rescue operations, recognition of speech, personal security, and customer service and as a smart home manager.
AI is also impacting the future negatively. There are concerns that AI use will continue to lead to job losses. This is attributable to the fact that the technology is replacing many tasks that were used to be done by humans. In this regard, the takeover of jobs by AI will increase economic divides, which will in turn lead to social upheavals, encompassing populist uprisings (Dinh, 2019). There are also concerns that dependence lock-in will result from the use of AI. This means that people’s social, cognitive and survival skills will reduce. Increased dependence on machines will erode the ability of people to think for themselves, act independently from automated systems and interact efficiently with others (Dinh, 2019). The likelihood of mayhem from AI use is high. AI will increasingly erode conventional sociopolitical structures as well as augment the likelihood of significant loss of lives because of the increased growth of independent applications in the military and the utilization of weaponized information, lies and half truths to hazardously destabilize human groups (Dinh, 2019). There is a significant possibility that cybercriminals may even reach into economic systems.
