Natural disasters are not only environmental threats but high economic risks. For example, the 2019/2020 bushfires have had a major impact on the accommodation sector and affected business viability. Binna Burra Lodge was hit by the fire on 8th Sep 2019, destroying most of the heritage listed buildings (Cotterell & Gardiner, 2019). Bushfires on Kangaroo Island destroyed one of Australia’s best luxury lodges, Southern Ocean Lodge, in January 2020. A bushfire which savaged the Snowy Mountains has torn through Selwyn Snow Resort and left the popular tourist destination in ruins.
You are required to write a report on accommodation disaster management based on the context of the Australian bushfires. Several research tasks of this assessment include:
(a) BinnaBurra Lodge_QLD (b) Southern Ocean Lodge_SA (c) Selwyn Snow Resort_NSW
1. Select one out of the three mentioned Australian bushfire-affected accommodation providers, describing its location, source market, size and characteristics. (about 500 words)
2. Describe its disaster preparation before the bushfire event, key response to the bushfire event (during the bushfire), and some recovery strategies and actions after the bushfires. (about 1,500 words)
3. Study the hotel disaster management and business continuity literature, recommend some disaster recovery strategies that haven’t been employed by the selected accommodation provider.
