Purpose
You will be choosing a topic for your final research paper (proposal), and the literature review
will give you a chance to begin exploring what has already been published about that topic.
Your literature review will help you to begin thoroughly researching your topic and evaluating
sources. You will be able to use parts of your literature review in your final research paper.
What to Include
A literature review is a survey of published research about a particular problem. In addition to
summarizing relevant research, the literature review should organize, integrate, and evaluate
information and sources. Our APA Manual suggests a literature review should do the following:
 define and clarify the problem;
 summarize previous investigations to inform the reader of the state of research;
 identify relations, contradictions, gaps, and inconsistencies in the literature; and
 suggest the next step or steps in solving the problem.
The literature review should cover a minimum of five, peer-reviewed sources, which should
be scholarly sources. Your discussion of these sources should trace common themes,
evaluate reliability and usefulness of information, and make comparisons between the sources.
NOTE: This is not a string of separate article reviews (or paragraphs). Instead, this review of
literature is an integration of all articles into one narrative, to support your argument.
Topic
The topic for your literature review will be the same topic you will pursue in your final research
paper (proposal). Example: Please choose a public health concern (problem) you think is
important for the public to be aware of and for the medical community to respond to in some
way (including your researcher). You will not be solving the problem; rather, you will be
proposing possible solutions to solve the problem. Your final research paper should answer
the following question:

These questions will help you to define a particular problem/issue related to healthcare and
