1.2 Discussion: What Is Leadership

Getting Started
Recognizing good organizational leader characteristics is important, not only to ensure that your leadership style is benefiting the organization but also to identify these characteristics in others so they can provide the greatest service to the organization.

From the material in Chapter 1 of the textbook, this assignment will help you understand organizational leader characteristics as you consider and defend your perspectives and consider those of your peers.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

Evaluate leadership styles.

Resources
Textbook: Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience
Video: A Definition of Leadership
Video: The Art of Following

Background Information
In this discussion, you will consider the various definitions of leadership as provided in the textbook from the authors’ review of literature in the field of leadership.

You will also explore the concept of leadership as both rational and emotional, as well as the differences between the roles of a manager versus the roles of a leader. Watch the video A Definition of Leadership to increase your understanding.

The concept of followership is also introduced in this assignment’s reading from the textbook as well as the growing role of women in leadership positions and responsibilities.

Watch the video The Art of Following for an in-depth look at followership.

Instructions
Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
Read Chapter 1, “What Do We Mean by Leadership?” in our textbook. As you read, reflect upon the definitions of leadership and how these definitions and other aspects of leadership add to your prior understanding of a leader’s role in an organization.
Navigate to the discussion below and answer the following questions:
Of the bulleted list of leadership definitions in Chapter 1, comment on at least three that you have personally experienced or observed and give examples. Which one of these definitions is most appropriate in most situations and why? Provide a detailed explanation for your evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
To the extent that leadership is both an art and a science, what methods come to mind for improving both the art and science of one’s leadership? Provide a detailed explanation for your evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
Referring back to the 1.1 Discussion, relate the application of one of the leadership or spiritual gifts (Romans 12:1–21) to a leadership situation. How did the leader (you or someone you observed in a leadership role) use one or more of the leadership or spiritual gifts to achieve a positive or favorable outcome?
Your initial response should be 200–300 words in length and is due by the end of the seventh day of the workshop.
Note: Although this activity is designated with 0 points for now, this initial posting is required to earn the full 40 points in Workshop 2.2.

1.3 Assignment: Leadership Development
Getting Started
This assignment explores Chapter 2 of the textbook, the processes and methods for developing one’s personal, individual-level growth as a leader.

The authors contend that while leadership can be learned through training and observation, the most powerful component of one’s leadership development comes through personal experience.

It is strategic, therefore, to understand how you learn through those experiences in order to gain the most benefit for your future roles as a leader.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

Analyze different leadership development methods and processes.

Resources

Webpage: A-O-R Model
Webpage: Summary of Lewin’s Force Field Analysis
Article: What does it take to change this?.
Video: Lewin’s Force Field Analysis Model
Video: Using the Force Field Analysis

Background Information
In this assignment, you will consider the development of a leader, including the action-observation-reflection model and the key role of perception in the spiral of a leader’s experience.

Leadership development planning is explored, but it is more than a plan, it is a process.

Coaching is a critical part of leadership development, both formal and informal.

Personal mentoring is also explored, including the “three C’s” critical to leadership development:

Confidence
Competence
Credibility

1.4 Assignment: Leadership Competencies

Getting Started
One of the major assignments in this course is the creation of a personal development plan. Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy (2019) believe that leadership competencies can be developed. Regardless of how competent you feel in your leadership abilities, you have the opportunity through education to grow and develop into a better, more confident leader. This development will need planning and direction in order to come to fruition.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

Integrate elements of leadership into a personal plan.

Resources
Textbook: Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience

Background Information
Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy (2019) contend that any person can improve their leadership effectiveness because leadership involves skills, and skills can be practiced and developed through experience.

Preparing a written, systematic, personal leadership development plan that outlines self-improvement goals and strategies will help leaders take advantage of opportunities they otherwise might overlook.

There are many templates for developing personal development plans. At the end of Chapter 3 of Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience, there is a template for a GAPS (goals, abilities, perceptions, and standards) analysis.

We will utilize this template in order to evaluate where you are now (abilities and perceptions) vs. where you want to go (goals and standards) in your leadership career. From this template, you will be able to develop your plan.

Instructions
Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
Read Chapter 3, “Skills for Developing Yourself as a Leader,” and also review Chapters 1 and 2 in our textbook. Considering the information in Chapters 1 through 3, think of the elements of developing a personal leadership plan.
Review Figures 3.2 and 3.3 in our textbook.
Develop your own GAPS analysis:
Follow the format of the GAPS analysis when you create your own personal development plan for this assignment.
Provide a detailed explanation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking. Please note that the GAPS analysis is not submitted for a grade. Only the development plan is to be submitted.
In the Goals section, clearly discuss what your career goals are and what steps (strategies) you feel you need to take in order to achieve those goals.
In the Abilities section, give an honest assessment of your current strengths that will assist you in reaching your career goals as well as an assessment of what developmental needs (weaknesses) you have.
In the Perceptions section, consider how others perceive you. Get feedback from peers, subordinates, and supervisors to critically assess how others see you.
In the Standards section, list expectations that must be met in order for you to achieve your career goals.
Up to this point, you have only done the preliminary work for developing a development plan. Nothing that you have done thus far will be turned in.
You are now ready to write your development plan, which will be submitted for a grade.
Clearly address Steps 1–7 toward the end of the section “Development Planning” in Chapter 3.
A paragraph or two is required for each of Steps 1–6. If you can reflect with a partner (Step 7), that would make your plan more likely to succeed, but it is not a requirement for this assignment. If you would like to use a partner, you may reach out to classmates via email or through the Course Cafe Forum.
Your writing for each of Steps 1–7 should provide a detailed explanation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking. Be sure to use correct spelling, grammar, and APA format. The overall plan should be at least 1,000 words in length.
For questions on APA style, go to OCLS APA Writing Styles Guides.
When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor by the end of the workshop.
You may want to review your progress every six months toward completing your goals or revise your plan as your situation changes.
