Naturalistic Observation

File Submission: For this lab, you will submit two files to the appropriate location on CC:
• File #1: This completed handout
• File #2: Your Running Record notes (either the typed Word doc of your notes OR photos of your handwritten notes)
Both files must be submitted for credit to be given. Upload your completed files to the appropriate location on CC. See syllabus for deadlines. All lab submissions moving forward are individual submissions (no more lab partners).

PART 1: CONDUCT OBSERVATIONS

Instructions:
1) First, decide if your fictional Target Child for your Assessment Project will be boy- or girl-presenting.
2) Using the “Video Categories Spreadsheet” from the Observation Project, select Preschool-aged videos only.
3) Of those videos, select 5 INDOOR videos and 5 OUTDOOR videos (10 videos total).
4) Of those 10 videos, select ONE child (either boy- or girl-presenting) in each of the videos.
• Watch only that child during the entire duration of the video. Conduct a running record in your notebook, documenting everything that happens.
• Note as many aspects of their behavior during this time as possible, and when relevant, others’ behaviors/ comments to the child.
• Include various aspects of development (e.g., social, emotional, language, cognitive, motor)
5) Repeat with the remaining videos, only coding ONE child per video. Be consistent in whether you have selected boy- or girl-presenting as your Target Child’s gender.
6) By the end of the lab, you should have conducted running record observations with 10 different children (10 videos x 1 child per video) (either all boys or all girls).
7) When you’re finished, review your running record notes and fill out the sections below.

PART 2: WRITE OBSERVATION SUMMARIES

Synthesize the behaviors of the 10 children that you observed in the videos and write your observation summaries as if you’re talking about ONE child (your Target Child).
• Observation summaries should not be a play-by-play of their behavior (first, he did this, then he did that…).
• Instead, this section should be a detailed and informative yet concise summary of the child’s behavior in each set of observations (indoor, outdoor). Include examples when relevant.
• Make sure you that write formally and check for spelling/grammar before you submit.
• Use a colored font for your typed answers below.

INDOOR OBSERVATIONS

OUTDOOR OBSERVATIONS
