I’m working on a health & medical question and need an explanation to help me learn.

Define the terms “clinical practice guideline” and “critical pathway”. Explain what each is and provide an example of each.

Clinical practice guidelines are defined as explicit descriptions of preferred clinical processes for managing a clinical problem based on research evidence. They are reported by a systematic review of evidence and an assessment of the benefits and harms of any kind of alternative care options. These guidelines are to be as definitive as possible, created through a particular and systematic review, followed by a formal consensus building among a group of experts. Health care professionals rely on these guidelines to provide and evidence based, unbiased recommendations for the care of patients. An example of following the clinical practice guidelines would be when screening for breast cancer. The guidelines state out a set of age-specific charts that consider periodic health exams during seven different age groups. According to the CDC woman who are 50 to 74 years of age and are at risk should be screened every two years. Woman between the ages of 40-49 are recommended to speak to their health care provider about when to start and how often to get a mammogram. Critical pathways are defined as interdisciplinary, outcome-based, patient- centered tolls for clinical management that facilitate care coordination among multiple departments and caregivers in a facility, such as a hospital. As competition in the healthcare industry has increased, managers have embraced critical pathways as a method to reduce variation in care, decrease resource utilization, and potentially improve healthcare quality. Cardiovascular medicine in particular is an area in which critical pathways have been supported. This is due in part to the high volume and high cost associated with cardiovascular diseases and procedures. In addition, the relatively mature guideline process has also contributed to the growth in use of critical pathways in cardiology.
