The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health’s Community Ambassador Network (CAN) provides a potentially important vehicle for achieving multiple objectives, including improved mental health among community residents, the development of meaningful career paths for community health promoters (promotoras), a platform for a diverse set of voices to be heard, and additional resources that could be applied to meet a wide range of community needs.
The purpose of this project is to analyze how CAN is able to build upon promotoras programs’ past successes by reaching into African American and other communities and by expanding the range of services offered vis-à-vis traditional promotoras’ roles. Specifically, the project will: 1) describe the status quo with respect to CAN; 2) analyze options to expand the program to account for unmet needs; 3) develop measures of program success; 4) examine models for the effective recruitment, training, and retention of promotoras; 5) explore ways to better leverage technology to improve program efficiency and effectiveness; and 6) provide LAC DMH with recommendations to be used in a County strategic plan for CAN.
