You are required to write a personal philosophy of education. Writing a personal philosophy statement allows you to explain your beliefs and reflect on your thoughts as they relate to teaching and learning. This is a formal paper and requires thoughtful reflection.

Format Requirements:
-Include a cover page with your full name, UM student ID number, course number (EDCI 352), and course section.
-2-4 pages, typed (500-1000 words)
-Double spaced
-One inch margins
-Formal font (Ex: Times New Roman, Garamond)
-Cite a minimum of one source in your text using APA citation and include a reference page with the complete
citation for any sources used.

As you begin writing your philosophy, consider the following topics as guides:

• What is the purpose of education?
• What is your role as an educator?

• How will you reach the diverse children in your classroom?
• How do you define your community of learners?

• What are your beliefs about how children learn?
• How will your beliefs affect your teaching?

• How do you balance the needs of the individual learner with the needs of the classroom community?

• How will you bring a global awareness into your classroom?
• What will be your relationship with the community, parents, teaching colleagues, administration?

-When appropriate, “drop names” in your philosophy. For example, “As Erikson, I believe that children go through a series of mini-crisis as they mature and it will be part of my task is to assist young people in making these transitions.”
-For example, rather than writing “I strongly believe in inclusion.” write “I believe that inclusion is a key ingredient in the makeup of the classroom and I will support inclusion through practices such as using alternative assessments and preparing lessons which appeal to different learning styles.”
– Make sure to use an eye-catching title.
-Don’t discuss problems in education or your opinion of these problems. Be positive!
-Write in the first person narrative. For example, “I will…” or “I believe..”
-Use information from texts or other qualified sources to include in your statement. Be sure to use correct APA citation.
 Only include the author’s first name initial. For example, the author is Liz Hollingsworth. In the citation, only write L.
 Only capitalize the FIRST WORD in the title.
 Italicize the journal title or book title.

This is the correct format for your in-text APA citations:
When preparing students for standardized testing in reading, the teacher must define what reading is according to the test and introduce the students to the content represented on the assessment (Hollingsworth, 2007).
