At present, there are 11 categories of hospital-acquired conditions (HAC). Discuss how you, as either a nurse educator, nurse leader or nurse informaticist (depending upon your chosen MSN track), can promote the improvement of clinical quality and patient safety through implementation of the rule. The October 1, 2008 legislation requires medical specialists to deal with patients diligently (Oermann & Heinrich, 2013). It aims at averting negligence of hospital personnel by making hospitals responsible for select conditions acquired in the hospital. The law is justified as it would be unethical to receive payment for treating medical complications contributed by the hospital. As an educator, I will discuss on how to improve clinical quality considering RN-BSN/MSN track. Also, I will discuss the implementation of October 1, 2008 as a nurse educator. Different nursing colleges promote this program and facilitate nurses registered with diploma qualifications to obtain Master’s degree in nursing without obtaining a Bachelor’s degree (Feldman, 2001).
First, I will encourage nurses with diploma qualifications to join the RN-BSN program. (Gates & Fink, 1997). This would reduce their chances of making error and improve quality. For instance, the rule requires the verification that the surgical procedure was accurately done. The rule also requires the patient to participate in the verification procedure.
Second, I will ensure that the clinical endocrinologists are provided with resource based document to assist them deal with patients suffering from diabetes mellitus. This will ensure that nurses are equipped appropriately to handle different medical complications on diabetes.
Third, since most of times the RN-BSN program is normally provided online, I will champion a project that ensures nurse trainees attend a clinical practicum in a community-based hospital. The program will ensure that specialists do not concentrate on theoretical concepts only, but also obtain the practical part of learning.
Lastly, the college providing the RN-BSN program will liaise with the hospitals where their students undergo training to ensure that they perform their duties diligently and according to the specified guidelines.
